We are not surprised when the old, having reached the 11m ft of the little apace allotted to human life, sink gently into the grave. For we reason "when the hand grows palsied and the eye dim with the mist of age, it is time to die." But when one rejoicing in youth and strength, whose future is bright with promises unfulfilled, is stricken in the flush of manhood and borne eff by the victor to the grave, we are startled with surprise. The subject of this sketch waa in the full vigor of life, with success comparatively achieved. He had left his home in Columbus county and embarked in business in Florida. There, while pushing his work as a railroad con ductor, he became thoroughly poisoned with that subtle and potent agent, malaria. Anxious al ways to do his whole duty, he failed to be warned in time, and only after his health was fatallv un dermined, could he be prevailed upon to leave his post. Of the lingering months of affliction It Is not my purpose to write. But pf the last few weeks, during whlch'his faith in Christ shone forth with such peculiar beauty, I would be glad to tell . By nature one of the most generous and grateful of men. It seemed easv for him tQtaRe" fast hold of tbe glorious promises of the godpel, and having onoe accepted them, there seemed . never a shadow to have Interposed for even one moment of time. I delight, in honor of the di vine Saviour, to record the fact that His adopted child seemed to cling closer to Him as he de scended into the grave. But it was when the last scene approached that his faith sent forth Its brightest light. Calling his weeping sisters, one by one, he kissed them good-bye, then taking his only brother's hand, he held it as if he could not give bim up. To each one he snoke words of tender love and assurance of eternal life. His sisters asked him: "Have you any message for juoya 7 (an absent nepnew). lie replied, "yes, tell Mm I am going home. Tell him to pray and Henry," (an absent brother-in-law). When he had descended so far into the misty shadow that speech became difficult, he was asked. "Johnny, can you still trust the blessed Saviour?" He gave an affirmative sign, but seeming to think his an swer not sufficiently distinct, he answered with an effort "yes." Turning to his uncle, a veteran of the cross, he asked him to pray. No one who it prayer will ever forget it. Jtyes un accustomed to weep, were wet, and strong men were subdued by the awful solemnity of the scene. On tbe preceding day, when he made a formal declaration of his faith and received tbe emblems of Christ's broken body and shed blood, he seemed anxious that his meaning should not be mistaken. He assured bis friends that the step of uniting with the Church was de liberate. I nave stood by the bedside of many as they passed away from earth, but never saw a more tnumpnant aeatn tnan this, ua i couia the tenderest love' and most Incessant care, could the skill of physicians or their most anxious : sympathy havo availed, he would have lived: but how powerless is the tenderest love or the utmost of human skill in the presence of the Great Conqueror who strides ruthlessly over mem an to nis victim, 'i nis aeatn win carry sad ness to many a heart, but outside of his family there is no one who feels more deeply grieved than he who shared with him many of his lonely nights, and tried by all the resources of his art to lessen his Buffering the writer of these lines.
