The Wilmington District Conference as sembled at "Goshen Church, Sampson coun ty, Wednesday, v July 23d, 1884, at, 10 o'clock. Rev! Dr. W. n. Bobbitt, P. E., in the chair.j i . , .'; .. Reading of the' Scriptures and prayer fol lowed. The roll of preachers and lay? dele gates was' then called,' when ten preachers and nineteen delegates reported present. . Mr. Campbell was elected Secretary and Rev. D. EL Tuttle assistant. ; : - The Presiding Elder, in every case when the roll was called, required an excuse (if any could be used) from all reported absent. -Brothers Gibbons, Culbreth and Duvant were appointed by the -Elder to examine the Qnarterly.Oonference recprds from the various charges, v , vThe Presiding Elder in a few well chosen remarks addressed th Conferen.ce on the importance of thejwork before it, ; and the necessity .of close application in order, that we may attend-to -all ' the business ' which would present itself; ".The: Elder also re quested that when reports were made from various charges that the financial point be presented by one layman from each charge. I Front Street Wilmington,1 was1 called when Rev. Dr. Tales reported his work as follows: His charge was in good condition, comparatively, and he had those who were ready to work at any point for the good of the church. - Congregations r large, social meetings well attended, 'communion .ser vices well attended. Sunday School "well organized and well attended, "'faithful teachers and altogether a fine school, ; He represented also ; a christian association which was hot only a spiritual benefit but through this money was raised and expend ed for the ptxf of the church and the sick' looked after; W," M. Parker presented the financial interests of the church as being in good condition . j Fifth Street' was called, when Dr. Bobbitt spoke veryyfeelingly of Rev.v Mr. Hnll, pastor in charge, spoke of bis patience under ' affliction, his firm trust in God and though he were sick yet by his pure life he -was still preaching by force of example. Rev. J. ' W. Craig reported for the church and said the condition was spiritually good; ' finances good and thinks the station has done better financially this year than for years - before, . The people feel a deep interest and affection for Brother Hnll and so far as they are able they are doing all they can for his comfort. - -i Dr. Bobbitt paid a high tribute to the faithfulnesrandrsacriflcing - spirit of the Fifth street charge and presented their ex ample as worthy of attention-- ; i Topsail Circuit was represented through Rev: Mr. Crisp. "vHe was encouraged in his work by the large congregation and Sunday school wprk, and thinks the work is in good condition. - Owing to the ex treme length of his circuit.it seemed impos sible to get out a full Quarterly Meeting. They were finishing and building several churches. ' , - I Dr; Satchwell reported on finances. 1 The assessment plan works successfully, and is the only one worth talking abouk About one half is raised up to now for the sup-' port of the preachers and ' the' Presiding Elder. .The ladies are working very suc cessfully in the interests of the Church. : Smithville Station Rev. Mr. Tuttle gave a fine report of his charge; large congrega tions and a revival a short time back; mis sion work was attended to, having raised 160 at. one contribution; good Sunday school y- organized a -: isanu -ui xxupc, young men being pledged to use neijher to bacco nor -whiskey;4 also a Sunday -school on Bald ; Head, f Brother. Brother Gentry and two lay delegates having arrived took their seats within the bar of the Conference. - - . The Presiding' Elder, Rev. Mr. Thomp son and Brother J. H. Weeks were ap pointed a committee on Public Worship. - A committee of three were appointed on Education, viz: Dr. Satchwell, Wm. M. Parker and K. K. Counsel. , ; . i Elizabeth Circuit was called.and reported by letter from the pastor, Rev. J-B. Bai ley, who was sick and unable to attend. His report was highly encouraging in all particulars. He dwelt especially upon in fant baptism, a work in which he was deeply interested. - New churches were going up-ana tne wur. w u,ucmj BriSswick Circuit reported through their 'pastor, Rev. T, J. Dr; Black and Rev. B. B. Culbreth were introduced-to thTConferencev"and were invited to seats within the bar. Dr. Black expressed his pleasure at being here on his old district, where he had so many friends. ; . . , -. K Thompson:- Some . were doing their whole duty as best they could; others as superfi cial Christians; prayer meetings at all the churches;' attendance good; Sunday School interest much improved.; , v J . At this place (Goshen) there was a large and interesting school ; they -expect to raise $30 or $40 out of this school Tor mission work." . " r ; ' ' " " . ' An interesting discussion on Union Sun day Schools was held at this point. Two lay delegates arrived during the ses sion; also. Brother Jones, from Waccamaw. Mission.' j ;.,.;.: ' '..,.. - - The Conference adjourned, for preaching at 11 o'clock, by Rev. H. H. Gibbons, from 5th chapter James and last verse. In an earnest manner he set forth the impor tance of personal conversion and personal effort on the part of the church members for the conversion of sinners. His sermon was listened to With much interest, v y ABTBBNOON SESSION. ":- Religious service was conducted by Rev. J CL Crisp. -;-. j 's.,- ; Lay delegate Johnson, from Clinton Cir cuit, and two from Newton Grove were re ported present, making up to this time 14 preachers and 38 Lay delegates. ; Dr. Satchwell, chairman of committee on Education, presented their report looking .especially to the establishing of a District Conference school at Rocky 'Point The trustees of : the .-; ' Academy. - (erected at this place) 'offering ' the property to the - District Conference. This property to be had and held by the Conference in view of a school being established there under the management of the District Con ference. " Rev. Dr. Yates moved the adoption of the report, and also moved the appointment of a board of managers consisting of five as the property would be' held by the trustees at Rocky Point church. Dr. Yates spoke warmly in favor of a school and that it was important that the school be sustained by. the people of this District. A school to be efficient must have our whole heart, work and patronage. He must make up to the necessity of education, he' must go home and at each of our appointments impress our people with the importance of educa tion. He must educate the heart and the mind in order to have good society. Those who grow up in . ignorance are bound to be the hewers of wood and drawers of. water. The' young lady who is educated though not wealthy is a benediction to any com munity ' ' and . can find a : good - home and a living anywhere. We are. behind in this K)ther districts have schools where they are educating their children, both mentally and morally. The ; report was adopted Also that a Board of Managers be raised to consist of Dr. Bobbitt, -Dr. Yates, D, B. Nicholson. F.-H. Bell, Jho. E. Durham, Dr. S. S. Satchwel and Dr. J. a Sheoard. The Conference then adlourned until 9 o'clock to-morrow morning. ? He dispatches business and understands the WOrk fully, lie has won the hearts of all the people of his district.
