Shortly after, the rope was cut and Jefferson's body shot up into the air, but the knot slipped round under his chin and his neck was not broken. Bartholomew Keefe, aged 47, janitor, was badly burned about the head and "body ; Ann Gibbons, aged 29, and her children George, aged 6, and John, I aged 2 were all terribly burned and are now in the hos pital. James Gibbons, aged 4, another child, whpm the mother was unable to res cue, was burned to death. . Omaha, Neb., T Aug 1. Fire lroke out this morning in "the old rink building No. 23 Chestnut street, occupied by John Wannamaker as a furniture man . ufacturing building. The fire spread rap idly, and four saloons, the yard of R. Hall's planing mill, a cigar store, an unoc cupied Btore, PhiHan's lumber yard and the hotel known' as the. Howard House, were all burned. The total loss on the rink building and other, property is estimated at t set ween $150,000 and S175.000. The paper mill of Moore, House & Bro., J at urmgebury, Fa.; was entirely burned this morning. Louisville, I August l.r-A special ' dis patch from Breckenridge says: Ai shoot ing affray .occurred - near Burn's, in this county; resulting in the instant death of JSusna Alexander, tne serious wounding oi his brother John, and the severe wounding of Mrs. Charlie Poole sister of the Alex ander boys and wife of one of the shooting arty. Charlie Poole had run away witn, liss Alexander and bad feeling was en gendered between the families. The Alex anders threatened Poole s me. un i tsatur day, young Poole and wife, accompanied by his brother John, attended a picnic in theneighbornood, ana wnen returning home, in order to cut off some distance; turned into , a field on , the Alexanders' place and were riding across it when the two Alexanders, young men,, espied them from he house and ran down to intercept them . Between nine o'clock and noon to-day five deaths from cholera occurred. There were eleven deaths from cholera here last" night, and two at Toulon.. Fugitives are . returning in in creased numbers. The city is becoming more animated, and shops that have been closed arc reopening; - , - v Manchester, August 1. Cloth has but few buyers; the yarn demand is poor. The uuaraian. in its commercial article, says the condition of business has not changed. The market has been irregular. Prices have been fairly steady, but with an occa sional tendency to weakness. Sales have been slow,. - I j London, Aug. 1. It is reported from Cardiff that a man had died of cholera on board the French steamer Graville. from Marseilles, which is lying at anchor in the roads. Murder and Piracy on an Schooner -j I (By Telegraph to the Momlmt Star.l ; PrrrLAPTCT.TOiA, Pa. , August 11 A start ling story that the crew of" the schooner Julia Baker, from New York for Point-a-Petre, had mutinied, killed their captain, John Lewis, and have been selling the cargo in the West Indies, led the owners of the vessel, Messrs. Warner & Merritt, to insti tute inquiry i by telegraph. AS a result the , Collector of Customs . 4 at Key. West, Fla.,1 now holds in; custody the captain and four men of the crew of the Julia Baker, the vessel being now at the latter port. The man arrested as Captain Lewis does not answer the description of the Captain Lewis who took the schooner from New York. The original manifest is lost. The owners of ihe vessel express the opinion that mutiny occurred on board the schooner; that, a fight took place in which Captain Lewis was killed, and the crew, .seeing that they were in for it, de termined to sell the cargo and escape. - - BUSINESS FAILURES, I ... aaaaak , i Mercantile Agency Reports for -the ; Past Week. ;--r ' By Telegraph to the Horning Star. - New Yoek, August 1. The business failures throughout the entire country ' for the past seven days, as reported by R. G. Dun & Co., number for the United States 233, and- for Canada 18. A total of 215, compared with a total of 234 last week; showing an ; increase of 17 failures.
