J v Wobckstkb, Sept 3. The Democratic State Convention was called to order at 11.35 a. m. by General Ckllins, who con gratulated the Democratic party .upon the certainty of success in November. . " On motion of General Corse, officers of the State Committee were made temporary nfflww of the Convention. Committees on credentials and permanent organization. I Were appointed. The committee on Ure rfentiids reoorted that twenty-tw"o cities and . 325 towns were represented by 1,650 deled gates. Jonas IL French was made perma-J nent chairman and Col. J. W. Coreney of Cambridge, and R- J. Donnovan of Uos ton, secretaries. Col. French then ad- dressed the Convention. His remarks were repeatedly applauded, especially every al lusion to Gov. Cleveland. Reference to a , third candidate for the . Presidency (Gen. ; ' IL F. Butler) -was met with front " a number of delegales, which f quickly, subsided when Col. French with D the same sentiment, said he felt no unkind? ness toward Butler, but only ? regret at his action. Committees to nominate members of tie State Central committee to complete the balance of the State ticket and on Reso lutions were appointed. Jarvis N. Dun ham, of Pittsfield, in a speech of some length presented the name of Hon. Samuel W. Bowerman, of , Pittsfleld, as candidate for Governor. He urged that the undoubt ed ability and unquestioned integrity of Mr. Bowerman gave him especial claims which should not be disregarded. - E. Plammer, of Newton, moved the nomina tion of Bowerman, by acciamauon, out finding the -motion vigorously opposed withdrew it Mr. Gorgan, of Boston, of 4 fered a resolution, which was referred,' that the attention of the next Legislature be called to the necessity of limiting the hours oLwomen's, labor and providing for the improvement of shops, etcV, where they are employed, and that - the law which ex cludes employes from the right to recover damage? from railroads and other Compa - hies, for injuries received while in the dis charge of their duties, should be reformed. At 232 the Convention pro ceeded to-take one informal ballot. - Pend ing the ballot the resolutions were read and adopted , and heartily applauded, and the delegates rose and . gave three cheers for G rover Cleveland, the next President of the United States." v Jonas H. ' A resolution was adopted providing that the sense of the Convention is that all Congressional . conventions be held on or .before October 1st, and that councillor, senatorial and county conventions be held as soon thereafter as possible. , . The Chair announced that the Chairman . of the committee on Counting Ballots stated that a package of votes had been found so closely put together that they must have. been cast by mistake, and the committee .requested that the Convention proceed to another informal ballot. .It was moved to proceed to another ballot and that the com- mittee take Us place upon the platform and s the delegates pass in front of the commit tee as they cast their ballots. . .Col. Hagget moved that the committee be instructed to throw out the bunch of '.ballots in . question, and then report the state of the vote. After considerable dig ; cussiOn the amendment of Col. Hagget was .carried by a large majority. While the Convention was awaiting the report of tbe , 'committee Gen.' P. A. Collins made an ad dress. ,-. The committee soon appeared to report, and Col. French announced that the chair man had informed him , that it would be impossible to comply with the vote of the Convention. ; The committee were then discharged and a formal ballot was or dered. The Republican State Convention was called to., order at 11 .o'clock this morning by Chairman Lodge, who made no address. A motion that the chairman and secretary of the State Com . mittee be invited to act as temporary offi cers of the Convention was adopted and the various committees were then Appoint ed. The committee on Permanent Organi zation reported for president Robert M. Morse. Jr. ; for secretaries J. 3! Whipple and Robert A. Southworth. President Morse then addressed the Convention, A hearty outburst of enthusiasm occurred when the chairman referred to Bfcrlne as Jhe candidate of the Republican party, as represenung tne oeai iorm or governmental administration,., A delegate, called "for three cheers for Blaine and the delegates r responded with heartiness. ; The secretary read a telegram from Vermont as follows : "Our majority will not be less than 23,000, notwithstanding that a split ticket was run in the interests of Reddington." She had been affected with deep religious fer vor and began her long fast after reading of Christ's fast in the wilderness.
