Williams died to-day from the effects of a dose of fluid extract of aconite, which -itia said he had taken to cause a reduction in his pulse-beat, in order to receive an .in surance policy on his lif e. :' t The Western North Carolina Railway . extension from Salisbury to Paint Rock, and from Asheville to the mouth of the Naatahala river nearly 200 miles in length S Was chartered thirty years ago. The State owned, originally, three-fourths of th stock. Manv of the private' stock- :.- holders were ruined by the late war ... and the road could not pay the mortgage- debt. It was therefore several years ago sold to " the State for $850,000. Four years ago it was r sold to W. J. Best, of New York, who was said to represent a - company of New York capitalists, among them J. Nelson Tappan and Mr Grace. I,; These could not carry out the contract and ' subsequently ' assigned to ,the Richmond & West "Point Terminal Company, which was aided by the Richmond & Danville Syndicate. j Under contract the road was to be compieiea to ine mourn 01 the Nantahala river by September 1st, and Senator Z. B. Vance, Gov. Thomas J. Jar vis and State Treasurer John M. Worth were appointed -commissioners to see that the contract was carried out. He went to his room at 3 o'clock Saturday morning and wrote the following note to a man who roomed next to him: 'My kindest regards to you. You are the only gentleman in Statesville. : All others may go tohelL" He then drank a quantity ' of laudanum and got -in., bed, where he died. The bulletin of rav ages of cholera in Italy during the past twenty-four hours shows 643 fresh cases in Naples and 231 deaths. , Madrid, September 15. The Governor of Alicante subjected the inspector of health sent to that province by the Minister of the Interior to quarantine, since last reports six fresh cases of cholera and four deaths have occurred at Elche, and four fresh cases and three deaths at Novelda. In the city of Lerda a fatal case of sporadic ; cholera has occurred, . and one suspected case is reported in one of the suburbs of Barcelona, and several suspicious cases have occurred in the province of Tarragona, six of which have proved fatal. I Paris, Sept. 15. The fete given in this city in aid of cholera sufferers has been a great success. j : Toulon, Sept. 15. At Cette, a woman stricken with cholera was discovered to have been buried' alive. At Marseilles there are still an average of two deaths dai ly from cholera. Since the first appear ance of cholera in France statistics of the epidemic show the following results, as to nationality and the number of victims: Number of deaths French 1,140, Italian 427, Spanish 19, Greek 11, Austrian 6, English 5, Swiss 4, German 3, American 2, Swedes 1. Total 1,618. ' A daughter of the Marquis Del Tufo has succumbed to the epidemic. Railway ser vice to and from Naples has been stopped, with the exception of the mail train. One case of cholera has occurred at Leghorn. There have been three cases at Palermo; one of which proved fatal. ILLINOIS. Thompson's bank closed this morning. The following notice, signed by N. C Thompson, was posted on the doors: "Owing to the strin gency in the money market, I am unable to meet my obligations as they mature, and so I am compelled to -suspend. My assets belong to my creditors until their de-. mands are satisfied. ' Believing from com mon' experience that ; an - assignments would result in unnecessary. Joss. to. my. creditors, I have determined to apply my assets directly to satisfy my debts, if such course shall not meet the creditors' approval, as soon as accurate lists of my property and liabilities can : be made, ; I shall be glad to meet them in consultation as to how their interests can best be, sub: served." The liabilities are stated to be $500,000. The assets include stock in the N O. Thompson Manufacturing Co. , ' and are believed to be sufficient to cover ail liabili ties. Oxford Torchlight: The present tobacco crop promises to be the. finest that has been housed m Granville for sev eral years. So far, we have not heard of a single -failure in curing. -The brightest of our gold leaf tobacco is not generally well tasted, but the farmers tell us that this season it is as sweet and palatable as if sprinked with sugar. It is thoroughly ripe and smells like a ripe peach. - . ;- ; Charlotte Observer: Berry Bin ford, formerly of Monroe, is a young man who has' an extensive acquaintance in Char lotte. At one time no young man's future was brighter. He had a good business and was looking up in the world, but he gave way to temptation and one drunken scrape followed another until one morning he awoke to find himself in jail for forgery: The leniency of the parties whom he had wronged enabled him to get away, and shortly after leaving his home in Monroe he was forgotten. No news had been re ceived from him until this week- when the Knights of Honor,' of Monroe, received a letter from members of the -same order in Pickens county, Ala. The' letter stated that'Binford was arrested "in that county for carrying conceal weapons, and. in de fault of payment of fine and costs was workiDg in the chain gang on the public; roads.
