A special from Chattanooga,- Tcnn., says: Samuel Hayes, cashier of the Greenwood Coal Co. , was found dead on the railroad track this morning. His clothes had been rifled and his watch was missing. He was murdered for the purpose of robbery. Two bullet holes were found in his head. Pittsburg, Pa., September 26. The. total loss by the Southside fire, last night, was $200,000. The insurance aggregates $118,000. Chicago, September 26. A dispatch from Erie, Penn., says: The grand stand on the race course at the county fair col lapsed at 3.15 o'clock this afternoon. Nearly a thousand people were in attend ance. But one section of the stand was wrecked. Two hundred people were thrown into a mass. Nineteen dead bodies have already been taken from the wreck. Police and firemen have been sent to the rescue. . New Orleans, September 26. A mile and a half of trestle across Lake Pontchar train, on the' Northeastern Railroad, was burned, between the two draws near the mouth of Riglet's pass. FOREIGN. . There was one death from cholera to-day in the city of Barcelona! In the province of Alicante during the past 24 hours eight fresh cases of cholera developed, and there were seven deaths. Rome, Sept 26. Herr Von Schlaezer, Prussian Minister to the Vatican, has ar rived in Rome. He will present to Cardi nal Jacobini, papal Secretary of State, to morrow, a cote indicating the basis, on which Prussia proposes to resume negotia tions with the Vatican. , Rome, Sept. 26. Reports of the ravages of cholera throughout Italy for the past twenty-four hours give a total of 452 fresh cases and 212 deaths. At Naples there were 201 fresh cases and 95 deaths, as against 242 cases and 105 deaths for the preceding twenty-four hours. At Genoa there were 51 fresh cases and 20 deaths. Cairo, Sept. 26. It is expected that the Egyptian government will simply make a formal acknowledgment of the receipt of the protest against the suspension of the sinking fund, which was presented yester day by representatives of Germany, Aus tria, France and Russia. . , Parts, Sept. 26. Le Paris urges the Powers to inform England that she has gone too far in prompting the Egyptian government to break into the law in regard to Egyptian . finances. England, the same paper says, cannot be allowed to dispose of Egypt as she likes. - The National expresses the belief that in consequence of the protest of the Powers - England has already resolved to modify the financial measures which she had ex pected to enforce in Egypt. Manchester, Sept 26. Cloth is dull -and prices greatly in buyers' favor. Yarn quiet and rather easier. The Guardian's commercicl article says: "The market was quiet throughout the week, except during yesterday, when there was more business, , inspired by a decline in prices of id. to Id. A private dispatch from Rome, received in this city, to-day, states that owing to the prevalence of cholera in Italy the Papal Consistory will not convene until Decem ber. In consequence of this Archbishop Ryan cannot receive the pallium until that time. In orde. however, that his Grace may attend the Plenary Council, to be held in Baltimore, in November, in possession of the full power of his rank, the Pope has granted to Archbishop Ryan a special re script, giving him all authority that the pallium confers. The business failures throughout the entire country for the past seven days, as reported by R. G. Dun & Co., number for the United States 187, and for Canada 26. A total of 213, as against a total of 218 last week, showing, a alight decrease for the week. Failures are still numerous in the Pacific States.
