Alfred Rowland and Octa vius Coke, Esq., have signified their ac ceptance of invitations to address the Club at an early date. Tom Kippnr. This evening, begins for our Jewish fellow-citizens the holiest of all the holy days of this year the "Day of Atonement" or "Sabbath of Sabbaths," as tho Bible calls it. It is founded on Leviticus 23, 27: "In the seventh month, "on the .tenth day of the month, is the Day of Atonement, a holy con vocation shall it be unto you, and ye shall afflict -yourselves," &c. . During the whole of its continuance, t. e. from 6 o'clock this evening till the same hour to morrow even ing, the adherent of the Mosaic faith ab stains from all carnal engagements, as eat ing, drinking, and performs no manner of physical work. As the idea underlying this peculiar fast is that of Divine mercy ex tending to the greatest sinner and forgiving the repentant, the Israelite spends this day in fasting and praying; but as he is taught to believe that only sins against God are mercifully forgiven on this day, while sins committed against a fellow-man are not atoned for by fasting, he endeavors to be doubly diligent during the interval between the New Year and the Day of Atonement (usually styled penitential days) in deeds of mercy and charity and reconciling those whom he may have offended; and having made his peace with man, he approaches the mercy seat with Ithe earnest purpose of making his peace with his God. In the Temple, corner of Fourth and Market streets, Rabbi Mendelsohn will con duct the services both this evening, begin ning at 6 o'clock, and the whole day to morrow, beginning at 11 o'clock. He will also preach this evening, and to-morrow at about noon and 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Visitors are welcome. Not In a Praying Condition. We heard yesterday quite an amusing yarn on one of the colored men of this city. Our informant says he went to a certain colored church a few night ago where a revival was progressing, and in consequence af the fact that In frequently rested his head upon the back of the seat in front of him, and assumed other peni tent attitudes, it was thought by the good people of the congregation that he was de- .- - sirous 01 their prayers. He was according - ly conducted by two of the brethren to the front of the pulpit and invited to kneel He did so, but pretty soon the olfactories of the brethren and sisters detected the their midst in the from the smell of it) might be termed very inferior whiskey. An investigation was entered upon and two flasks of the demoralizing and anti- devotional liquid were found upon the per son of the new candidate, who was forth with reconducted to a place of less promi nence in the sanctuary, "i- - y r"; WIU Close. . , . The Wilinington "boys" will start for Raleigh Tuesday morning. It is a qucs tion yet as to whether some of the best drilled members of the company will not remain at home, but; it is hoped by Catt. Beery and his officers that they will bq induced for this once to make some sacrifice, or to prevail upon their employers to do so, and go, especially as the occasion is really an extraordinary one. Since wrjting the above we learn that a very determined effort has beenj made by some of our business men to secure full ranks atRaleigh, and the company feel thankful for what has been donej Notwith standing, however, it seems that about a dozen well drilled men will be unable to go. There is a certainty that three of these will have to Btay at home. It is earnest ly hoped that the others may yet be enabled to.help swell the ranks of the company on such an important occasion. Draymen In Trouble. j A number of draymen were summoned before Mayor nail yesterday morning for non payment of their license tax of fifty cents pcrtnonth. One was behind as much as thirteen months, and none less than five months. One of them discoursed eloquent ly and feelingly of the "hard times," and thought he had simmered the Court down to a delightful condition of sympathy for the poorj draymen, "which argued well for their cause; but His Honor remarked that he was there to execute the laws, and that what really seemed a hardship to them now, would have been a comparatively easy matter j if they had pud their taxes regularly j He further reminded them that leniency to them meant injustice to those who came up regularly and paid their monthly dues. He said, in conclusion, that he would, however, suspend judgment on the payment of costs, and the delinquents were turned over to Chief Brock! Colored Baptist Sunday School Con vention.
