The 'alarm, of fire yesterday afternoon, about 3 o'clock; proceeded from the burn ing of the roof of the large two-story frame tenement house, corner of Surry and Queen streets, the property of Mr. A.. H. Van Bokkelen. An old shed beyond the house in question, on Surry street, also caught fire, but the flames were soon extinguished. The house partially destroyed was occupied by several colored families and was insured for $500 in the Georgia Home, Messrs. Northrop & Hodges, agents. . 1 The German brig Diana, Capt. State peniten tiary. : Two cases against a magistrate, for false imprisonment and malfeasance in office, were continued over until next term. mayor's Comrw James Williams, colored, who says he came here from Fayetteville, had a hearing on the charge of acting very disorderly and creating a disturbance on the wharf Friday night. He was 'required to pay ' a fine of $5. Tho8 Bartlett, who stated that he was a native of Belgium, was charged ith cre ating a disturbance at a house on Nutt street, during which he knocked a man down. He denied that he struck any blow, and tried to convey the impression that he was skylarking. The evidence was against him, ho v ever, and he was fined $5, in default of which he was taken be low, where he took occasion to inform the police authorities that they could use their own discretion in disposing of him, and that they might hang him if they felt in clined. He showed his temper very deci dedly. A Novel map.' We examined yesterday a map drawn by Maj. W. L. Young, to be embraced in the book he is preparing for publication in reference to the "Semi-Tropical Area of Southwestern North Carolina," It shows the area of the sugar belt, the gulf stream, the showless area, the mean temperatures of the various towns, the counter currents. the area of great black phosphate deposits, and gives a graphic impression of the topo graphical and climatic situation of the re gion embraced in his forthcoming work. His ideas are certainly illustrated in an unique and novel way and will doubtless attract the attention of Northern people. The map will be handsomely lithographed. The State Exposition. A dispatch from Raleigh to the Stab says: A large number oi people from Eastern North Carolina are in the city. Private houses are accommodating the visi tors to such an extent that the hotels - are doing but little business. Quite a large number of colored people will attend their Fair, which is to be held during next week." Cotton.'" The receipts of cotton from the 1st to the 11th inst footed up 10,843 bales, s against 12,622 bales from the 1st to the 13th last year, showing a decrease of 1,779 bales. The receipts for the crop year from Sept. 1st to date foot up 22,932 bales, as against 21,318 bales for the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 1,614 bales. - Personal. t Dr. J.
