Spectator. THE ELECTIONS. OHIO. N. Y. World, Dem. The battle in Ohin Democracy this year under ereat diaadvnn. tages. No Democrat hoped for a victory; very few anticipated, any decrease of the Garfield majority of 1880. The reank-hf the election in Ohio vesterdav is a drawn battle, with a slight advantage to the De mocracy. The Republicans, although cau tious in their estimates during the. loot f days, felt confident of a majority far ex ceeding the October maioritv nf IP, (WHn 1880. " , .Norfolk Landmark, Dem. As we indicated vesterdav. But on the 4th of November the field will be too large for such maniDula- tion, and the "victory" in Ohio is what we expected. Notwithstanding this we confi dently expect Mr." Cleveland to be the next President of the United States. Savannah News. Dem. ;T Unless he "Republican maioritv in Ohio is considerably beyond 16,000 the elections yesterday will not have an appreciable effect on the national contest. The contest will now be for New York, and the Democrats are certain of carrying that State. With that State Cleveland will have enoueh States to elect him. - Washington Post, Dem. The life of the Republican party was staked on the Ohio result, while the Dem ocrats had no 'stake at all in the issue. The Democracy started out with the full expec tation that the State would go as It had gone in every Presidential year since the Republican x party; was born. As to the National canvass, the Democratic lines are steady and will move right on with every prospect of victory. All the States ex pected to o for the Democratic ticket give every possible indication that they will meet that expectation. Augusta Chronicle, Dem. The National Committee have warned us all along that the fight would not be made in Ohio, and that there was only a bare possibility of success. It was a life and death struggle for the Republicans. In November they have to encounter the Pro hibition vote as well as the Democratic. Their victory in Ohio will prove a Pyrrhic one. orover uieveiana wui oe the next President of the United States.' Charleston News & Courier, Dem. The indications this morning are that the ReDublicans have carried Ohio by a con -siderable majority the natural result of official bulldozing, ana tne corruption oi voters by the lavish use ot money, nut the Republicans have not improved their position. . They merely retain what in every Presidential election, has been theirs. They have not lost the Presidential elec tion. Neither -have they won it. lA , ' - ' Vr -V TimM . linn And'what is the result in Ohio ? A Re publican loss of 6,000 ' in the majority as compared with the vote of 1880.
