Six members -of the South Carolina Conference have died the nresent year a heavy loss. : If Christians lived nearer to God, they would have no difficulty in loving one another. Texas Advocate. The problem of life is often solved by the ' simple law of self-denial. Many a. life has been made a miserable failure because it undertook to grasp more than its capacities could provide. Self denial is notr then, alone essential in order that we contribute to the happiness of others, but to our own. j . j An Italian Protestant woman was oace asked to prove that the Bible was tbe Word of God. ' She was confused : she could not answer. Suddenly she asked her questioner, "How do you know there is a sun in the sky?" "I feel its warmth and see its light." "Just so," answered the woman, joyfully; "the BiVie enlightens and warms my soul." J)r. Bourland tells us in his let ter that the preachers have ceased this year preaching about science, falsely so called. and have preached repentance and faith, and regeneration and a holy life, aud upon hell and heaven. These were thenite dis cuVsed by Christ .when on earth, and no preacher will ever be wiser than the Master. He knew tbe moral wants of man and pro vided the supply. 'Let the preachers give the people the gospel, and reviva.s will never leave our ministry. Teza Advocate. Don't use a "pulpit . tone" in preaching or praying. ' Holy English" is abominable as a vehicle for the beautiful truths of the Gospel. . Don't mumble, or "mince, or mouth the Gospel, but speak forth the words of God with an open mouth and a free ton cue. Why should the preach er drive sensible people away from bim and the Bible by reading and speaking from the pulpit as if he were an ecclesiastical au tomaton, instead of a sensible man with a warm human heart and a voice and tone not like a'machine.butlike a Christian man. Evangelical Messenger. - A minister was giving a broth er minister an account of a rather remark able revival which had occurred upon his charee. The brother minister became much interested in the glowing story, and asked how many were received into the church. "Oh." said the first, "we did not receive any into the church, but we turned seventeen out. Perhaps there are church es in which it would be.a true sign of a re vival of religion if, by some means, they could muster courage enough, and con science enough, to expel the unworthy. Western Christian Advocate. - The analogy. between the bee hive and (he Church, is lost in the drones. There is no provision for such a class in the system of Christ. Religion is life and activity inspired by "faith which works by love." For this activity there are innume rable opportunities. However obscure the life, however lowly the station, however insignificant the talents with which we are endowed, the obligation is ever upon us to use them all in . the service 01 ennst ana for the salvation of the world. For the love of Christ constrains us to such devo tion It leaves us no choice. It lays us under an obligation, more sacred than law itself, to live unto Him that loved, us and gave Himself for us. The Cross is not a burden, out a magnet, as arauuj uic heart and controls the life of all who feel its power. An unfruitful faith is a contra diction. A useless Christian is an abor tinn Paralysis in the soul that has been raised from the dead by the grace of Christ, and lnvesieu wim tspirikuoi uuuiunu; a condition that gives the lie to every pare of his glorious gospel. Bichmond Chris tian Advocate. Something is lowering the mo ral standard of : many men in this country. Whether it is the disregara ior - toe oao bath, or a love of money, or a love of the world; whether it is the result of the ex ample of many of those who have come to us from Europe, or of the scepticism im ported from European scholars, whatever may be the cause, the fact is becoming more evident that the moral sense of thou sands among us has been weakened and Derverte3U' Ctime abounds among all classes and in every part of the country. There is a great deal vof virtue, and aiso a great deal of vice.. There is much genuine piety and much piety that is strongly tainted with worldliness, and there is a large amount of impiety.
