The Church must grope her way into the alleys and courts and purlieus of the city, and up the broken staircase and into the bare room, and beside the loathsome sufferer; she must go down into the pit with the miner, into the forecastle with the sailor, into the tent with - the sol dier, into the shop with the mechanic, into the factory with the operator, into the held with the farmer, into the counting-room with the merchant. Like the air, the Church must press equally on all the sur faces of society like the sea, flow into every nook of the shore line of humanity; and like the sun, shine on things foul and low as well as fair and high,, for she was organized, commissioned and equipped for the moral renovation of the whole world. Bishop Simpson. Christianity is, first of all, a great body of revealed truths. These truths are addressed to the human intelli gence. They are intended to be under stood, and can be understood. In- their larger features, the lie level with the appre hensions of all men. We do not mean to say that they can be grasped in all their amplitude of meaning or followed out to all their magnificent consequences. Neverthe less, they do so come within our reacn as inas we may get an effective hold upon them, and make an intelligent presentation of them. And this Is the Christian minister's prime duty. He is constitutecLpf God the bearer of a message of a message sent from heaven and tinctured with the Spirit of its birth place, and yet to be delivered through the vehicle of human utterance, and to accomplish its purpose in the salva tion of human souls. This view of the matter adds immeasurable dignity to the minister and his omce. -laelimond Aclvo- jSpints Turpeiitine. v Vow ' 'Rprn Journal: . Gen. Raleigh Chronicle.'1 ' The DeoDle are at fault, if the law of the and is inoperative and fails to command the respect due. It is the duty of every good citizen to uphold wholesome laws and to use his influence in bringing offen ders to justice. There is too much stand ing back and refusing to give assistance to the authorities by word or deed in the full execution of their lawful duties. There is too much winking at and screening, either directly or indirectly, wrong doers. More backbone in every community would not hurt. Every law-abiding citizen should feel that he is personally responsible for his omission to do what he'ought to do in the preservation of good government, whether ocal. state or national. . .Let the law te enforced and then there would be no ground of complaint.
