A-canal from Broad Creek at the head waters of Alligator river, in the county of Hyde, a distance of about seven miles, would open up a very, large -body of rich lands between Matemuskeet Lake and Pun go river, a portion of which lands belong, we believe, to the Board of Education. But as great as would be the benefit to the State in opening these alluvial lands to agriculture,: the benefits to commerce and navigation would be still greater. The commerce between the counties contiguous to Albemarle Sound and the counties lying along Neuse river and south of Pamlico Sound passes' through that tempestuous, in land sea. With this canal from Alligator to Pungo river opened, navigation would pass through a corner of Pamlico Sound, thence up Pamlico river to Pungo river and thence through the canal into Alliga tor river, shortening the distance between New Berrfe, on lleuse river, and Elizabeth City, on Pasquotank river, nearly a hun dred miles, and affording a safe inland nav igation free from the dangers of Pamlico Sound.
