day. He always went hunting every Christ
mas day, and on this occasion he died very

Pittsboro 'Hotm: Robert J.
Hatch died suddenly , at his home hear
Pittsboro on the morning of the 27th of De
cember in the 63d year of his age. He was
a just and upright man, and a leading mem
ber of the Christian Church. Mr.
Thompson Lawrence met with a very seri
ous accident a few days ago at Baldwin's
mill, on New Hope. , He stumbled and fell
against the saw, which was running: His
hand and . shoulder were terribly gashed,
but he escaped with . his life. . Rev.
Daniel Hackney died at his residence in
this county on the night of the 27th of De
cember, in the 82nd year of his age. He
was a man 01 intellect and great force ox
character, and a thoroughly evangelical
minister of the Baptist Church. He repre
sented Chatham county in the Legislature

Mr. H. E. Scott was walking rapidly up
Princess street Monday night., on his way
to see a magistrate with whom he had some
business, when he suddenly plunged head
long down the steps leading into the base

iron gate to which had been left open. Two
gentlemen were standing conversing a short
distance from the spot and hastened to the
assistance of Mr. Scott, whom they found
prostrate on the stope floor at the foot of
the stairway; and : ascertained that he was

HOW THE N. O. EXPOSITION WAS INAUGU
RATED. The Inauguration of the Exposition at
New Orleans, noon, Dec. 16th, was cotemporary
with the 175th Monthly and Grand Extraordinary
Drawing of The Louisiana State Lottery, when
over half a million dollars was scattered by
blind Fortune's wheeL- Ticket No. 588? ."drew
the first capital prize of $150,000. ' It was sold in
tenths at tl eacn, two of. which $30,000 were
held for collection by the Canal Bank of New Or
leans; another two $30,000 oolleoted through
Wells, Fargo A Co.'s Bank, San Francisco, Cal.;
another $15,000 by Geo., M., Shackleford, ool
leoted through Bank, of Commeroe, Memphis,
Tenn. The remainder was sold to parties in Cin
cinnati and elsewhere. - No. 98,864 drew the see-'
ond capital prize of $50,000, and was also sold la
tenths. Two of which $10,000 was paid to the
Germania National- Bank, of-New Orleans, La.;
another $5,000 to John J. Mueller. No. 498 Hast -tags
st., Detroit, - Mich.; another $500 to Mr. G.
Carpit, a well known newspaper carrier of Mem
phis, Tenn. ; another- $5,000 to Messrs.-A. Goebel
