there is an immense increase of crime
in Maine, wliere 'the anti-liquor law

were 1,145 criminal prosecutions last year,
exclusive of a great number which were of
a minor character and did. not get beyond
the jurisdiction of a local court. Eleven
persons were -prosecuted .if or murder,' and
live were sentenced to death, one of whom
was a woman. Two murders, we believe,
have been" 'committed since the Attorney
General's report was made. - If Maine were
a border State, with a confessed reputation
for lax laws and loose morals, her criminal
record would not attract public attention to

admitted during the year, and forty
four have been discharged, , which
leaves 153 now at the ' Asylum.
Dr. Dixon, in concluding his report,
pay s a compliment to the ladies who,
by aid societies, have been of great
service by the asylum, and suggested
such action on the part of the Grand
Lodge as would secure the aid of the
ladies throughout the State. Mr. P.
H. Busbee offered the following reso
lution, which was adopted:

tee of .five be appointed to prepare
and report to the Grand Lodge for
the formation of a visiting committee
of ladies, and for the organization of;

ed around them and lighted, causing the

W- .Railroad, it is said, has purchased
eight acres of land , at Rocky Mount, upon

Goldsboro Messenger: There is
a movement on foot to organize a colored
fire company in this place under the organi
zation of the Goldsboro Fire Company No.
1. The cotton gin, -press and grist

Monday last. We are informed that a
telegraph office has been established at Du

of the wife'of Joseph Ward, Esq.. a Prom
inent Justice of the Peace, and for a long
tune a member of the Inferior Court of

night one of our citizens was passing along
Market street, and when opposite Mr.
Robert Edgerton's residence the front gate
suddenly but noiselessly swung open, and
punched turn directly in his stomach- Tne
citizen was armed with a paper bag con
taining two dozen eggs, and thinking that
he had been assailed by a footpad, he
struck the gate a vicious blow with the
bag;, painting the gate a new color, and
demolishing the eggs. When the unhappy
man reached home his astonished family
could only recognize him by his voice, for
the yolks of the broken egzshad done their
work, and changed his appearance to that
of a Mongolian. -

Polo on Skates.
; A game of polo on skates was the attrac
tion at the. City Hall last night. There
were eleven innings played, between the
Red Stockings and the Blue Stockings, of
which the Red scored six and the Blue five.
After the conclusion of the game there was
some fancy skating by Capt Bestow, which
was very good There was a fair crowd of
spectators in atteodapee, considering' the

traction in our city. R is located at No. 15
Market street, north side, between Front
and Water. The proprietor claims for it
thar it is the best show in existence for the
small price of admission. Families are
especially called upon to patronize it. This
afternoon at 3 o'clock there will be a per
formance especially for schoolchildren.
The Tiger.
The tiger from this jungles of Pender
was on exhibition yesterday at the shooting
gallery near the Front street, market, , ten
cents being the price of admission charged.
As in the case of a side-show at a circus, a
man stood at the door and proclaimed
"Ten cents will show you-the ; big black
tiger walk in. gentlemen !"
