Guthrie, that it. is the sense of the Bar Association that the solici tors should be appointed bv the Governor, with the '.consent of the Senate. BXPOBT. The committee on the judicial sys tem of the State, to whom were re ferred various resolutions relating to that subject, respectfally-rxsporftnat they baveconsidered the whole mat ter and recommend the adoption -of the following resolutions: 1st. That the best interests of the State require an amendment to the constitution providing for the ap pointment of all the judges by the Governor and his council, with the advice and consent of the Senate. 2d. That an amendment to the con stitution should be submitted to the people, providing for an increase of the number of justices of the Su preme Court to five. 3rd. That we recommend an in- crease in the numDer 01 superior Courts in such conn ties as need greater court facilities, with a provi- sion that some of the terms shall be for the trial of civil cases only, and in our opinion, to meet this require ment, the number of superior Uourt Judges should be increased to fifteen. A constitution was .adopted to govern the Association, and the time of holding the annual meeting of the Bar Association of the State was fixed on the first 'Wednesday after the second Monday in J uly next, at Raleigh. Hon. J. J. Davis was re quested to deliver the address at that time. THE BANQUET. Raleigh Farmer and Mechanic: Mr. H. D. Egerton, of Louisburg, sold last week in the Raleigh market a eood size lot of tobacco at $60 per hundred,. The House of Representatives passedthe John H. Reagan Railroad bill (to regulate rates between the States) by a vote of 161 to 75; and 87 not voting. Genj Cox, Col. Green, Capt Skinner and Dr York voted for it. Maj. Dowd and O'Hara voted against it. Col. Bennett and Gen. ft. B. Vance were absent on account, of .sickness. Al though Rev. W. 8. Lacy was too well treated at Henderson not to coitat orer the call tendered him to remove there, we learn that after going home he decided that after all "there is no place like home." Rockingham Rocket: Died, of pneumonia, in this town on the 21st inst, Mrs.-J. B. Howie. The total num ber, of spindles at work' in and around Rockingham , will aggregate, when the Roberdelia flu4 iro waiempiaxea improvements added to Midway, nearly twenty thousand. This means work and a comfortable support for many poor families of women and children. Information is wanted of the whereabouts of Walter Green, who left his home on the 29th of January, 1884. C. r While Mr. Napier was passing near a branch in the vicinity of Pee Dee village, he saw a buzzard near the pathway, and, after the bird had flown, bo went to see what he was preying upon. Itis a treat to hear this most eminent, of . astronomical Jeeturen present the riches of his learning , and ob servation and to condense the ..study of years in the compass of one discussion. We are glad that we have had the privilege of hearing this world-wide distin guished lecturer upon a branch of science that is so engaging. We can now turn again with renewed pleasure to those three remarkably entertaining and richly illus trated papers on "The New Astronomy" that appeared in The (jentury Magazine in the closing numbers of last year by an emi nent astronomer, to whom Professor Proc tor referred, we think. ' The Light Infantry had a fine, drill at their splendid armory in the City Hall basement Monday bright, which was con ducted by their new commander, Capt. J. T. Anthony. By the way, Capt. 'Anthony is said to give great satisfaction. Coming here a comparative Btranger some six or eight months ago, he has made many warm fnends in our midst, and especially among our Light Infantry boys, with whom he has been thrown mostly in contact. Capt. Anthony is a Virginian by birth, but had lived in Charlotte about eight years previous to his advent in our "city by the sea." About two years of that time he was Captain of the Hornet's Nest Rifles, of that place.: He was somewhat recently elected Colonel of the Fourth Regiment N. C. S. G. , a position which he has not yet re. signed, being for the present only the act ing Captain of- our company .
