The following is from a let-, ter that appearedinthe St. Mary's (Maryland) Seacon,' - prompted' by Senator Vance's recent lecture in Baltimore on "The last days of the war in North Carolina." The writer, who signs himself "Ex-Confederate," says: "The 'Bummer Corps' was organized after Gen. Sherman crossed the Savannah river. That the actions, &c.. of said corps were diabolical in the extreme, thousands are living to day -who can testify to the truth of our assertion. Just , before the General entered North Carolina, he was in formed that a member of the 'B. On the way dog ran past the party, .and the woman immediately went into spasms. She- was finally, carried to the jail where she now lies in a critical condition. On reaching the jail, the spasm having passed . off, she was handed a glass of water and immediately went into convulsions. Dr. Bratton, the county physician, was sent for, and upon his arrival immediately pro nounced the case hydrophobia. He says that the grain growers here hold a similar view. He' thinks the wheat and oat crop will be out 20 per cent, of a full crop. Washing ton letter: Carolina's Chances. The prospects have been good that North Caro lina would get two of the bureaus, ' viz. : Vance and Jarvis for Commissioners of Patents and Agriculture, respectively. The total ex penditures for the' year were $5,784.14, of which ,amount $2,890.88 was for perma nent improvements, including new wing, laundry wood-hou8e,sewerage and repair ing kitchen, leaving a balance, of $2,893.26 for operating the hospital. Receipts from pay patients and, other sources $283.85, leaviag $2b6Q9.9( as net' cost for operating expenses, orgsqpgthly average of. $217.49; as against 187.93 for 1883, with 126 tota i admissions, showing an iscrease of 40 per cent, in admission and only 16 per cent, in expenditures. The new wing is built in a neat an3 substantial manner, and is di vided into two wards, one' for males and the other for females, being supplied with dispensary, iterating room, bath rooms and water closets. Sewerage pipes have- bu added, and connection made with the "Vl'La' "U IV UIO UCkCOOltJ 1U1 $500 for that purpose from the county and city, and to provide a suitable range for cooking. The report of Dr. Lane, Surgeon in charge, commends the action of the Board of Managers in increasing the facilities of the Hospital; says our city physicians have taken great interest io the Institution ; com pliments the employes and attendants; al ludes to the urgent necoty for a mortuary or dead house, for purposes of post mortem examinations . for the benefit .of scientific medicine, etc.; alludes in terms of gratitude to the kindness and assistance he has re ceived at the hands of city physicians, and also from Dr. Peckham, of the U. S. Ma rine Hospital, and to the visits of the Sis.' ters of Charity of tfte Catholic Convent, the Sisters of St.' Jaiies' Home and other ladies. We understand that it is expected in a short time to make the institution self sus taining. It has certainly proved a great blessing to the community. - Yesterday's Eclipse Tne Total Eclipse of 1869. There was a partial eclipse of the sun yesterday, something over one-third of the disk being obscured. Smoked glass was pretty generally called into, requisition.1 ! For several sec onds during the total. obscuration there was every appearance of a dark night. ' The great revival at the Fifth Street Me thodist Church still continues with una bated interest. Thus far there have been 182 professions with 101 additions, as the result of the revival, and 122 additions since the first of January.
