The lighthouse at the mouth of the Roan oke : river war ; destroyed by fire to-day. The. lighthouse people barely escaped with their lives. Capt Clifton, the keeper, was blistered about- the face ' in trying to save some of the property. The lighthouse was built about 1860, at a cost of $20,000. The lantern ; was manufactured in Paris, and cost $1,400. Until the lighthouse is rebuilt a vessel will be stationed there to give no tice by a unit ; from her masthead or the .entrance to Roanoke Inlet.
