Thomas Butterworth, of Rockford, 111., died at the Swannanoa Hotel in this place on Satur day night He had been here but a few weeks, coming here in the hope of pro longing his life. Yesterday morning about half-past 1 o'clock, the alarm was sounded for fire in the second fire district, which was found to have its origin in the store of Mr. T. C. Fitzgerald, on the northeast corner of Sixth and Red Cross streets, formerly occupied by Mr. Thos. Beck. The fire damaged the store and its contents considerably, and made its way into the upper rooms occu pied by Frances Brown nee Mitchell, dam aging the furniture to some extent, before It was finally brought under control by the firemen. ; Mr. Fitzgerald's stock and store furniture was insured for f 1,000 in the Phoenix, of London, represented by Messrs. John W. Gorden & Smith. The building, which is the property of Frances Brown, was insured for $1,000 in the Queen and $1,000 in the North British Mercantile, represented ' by Messrs. Atkin son & Manning, and the furniture belong ing ' to same $1,000 in the Commercial Union, represented by Messrs. Atkinson & Manning, and $1,000 in , the Wilmington Mutual, represented by Mr. J. Kent Brown. Base Ball Note. The fence around the Seaside Base Ball Club's . grounds, formerly the. Athletic Club grounds, has been completed, and work is now progressing upon the grand stand and seats, which will be in position before the end of this week. The boys are working like they mean business. The State seems completely enthused on the subject of base ball, and the disposition appears general to make the coming season the liveliest in the history of the ball and bat. Goldsboro is to offer a prize of $100 to be contended for during the spring races in May, and it is to be hoped that the "Sea sides" will try their luck. By the way, we noticed yesterday that a room over Mr. H. H. Kasprowitz's cigar store has been set apart for the use of the "Seasides." It has been nicely fitted up and furnished with chairs, desks, tables, etc., and will make elegant and comforta ble craarters for the Chib,both for their own use and in which to entertain their visitors. Hi Wood, who has so many friends in Wilmington, was liberally "pounded" by his congregation in Fayette- ville on Friday of last week. The annual meeting of the Caro lina Central Railroad Company will be held at the office of the Company, in this city, on the 7th day of March, at 11 o'clock.
