Market street were horrified a day or two since to see the way. in which the poor animal was treated by its inhuman master. , The ox must have naturally been in great pain from its scarred and bleeding back, added to which the man gave it fre quent whacks across the wounded parts with his stick, causing the poor' brute to literally tremble from the ' intensity of ) the pain which It was suffering. We hope some effort will be - made by the proper authorities to put a stop to such brutality. Mints, nieht janitor at the City Hall, had his attention attracted yes terday morning, about half -past 1. o'clock, by an unaccountable presence of smoke, which, he finally found ; to proceed from the basement of the City Hall building, which is used by the Wilmington Light Infantry as an armory. Accompanied by Mr. John Casteen, Superintendent of Lights, he went down into' the armory, which was full of smoke, while fire was j found proceeding from a wooden spittoon, 1 niied with sawdust, into wnicn, it is sup- posed, some one' had thrown a lighted match or a stump of a cigar. The fire had also communicated to a bench, which Was considerably scorched. A bucket or two of water extinguished what might have re sulted in a. serious conflagration if it had remained undiscovered.
