in one of the houses in rear of the Great

and also left a fire on the hearth. She re
turned only in time to find her child, two
or three years old, wrapped in flames. The
child was seriously burned, and its cries
for relief were heartrending. Upon
interviewing the conductor, Capt Waitt,
we learned the following: Sheriff Hunter,
of Alamance, together with one of his dep
uties, got on board the cars at Haw River
with J. Y. Deshong, under arrest, bound
for this city. When near Garner's, a sta
tion a few miles this side of Raleigh, De
shong, who was in charge of the deputy in
the second class car, asked to be allowed to
go into the rear car to speak to him, which
the deputy-readily granted him and with
out going with him. No sooner had De
shong reached the platform of the car than
he jumped into the bushes. We hear
it rumored that a warrant will be issued by
Judge Clark for the sheriff of Alamance
and hia deputy for the escape of Deshong
yesterday. The warrant will be made re
turnable to Wake next week. - -

Seekers After Burled Treasure.
There seems to be an impression abroad
in certain quarters and among certain per
sons that there is a good deal of huried
treasure somewhere in this immediate
vicinity. How such an idea can have been
obtained we are at a loss to conjecture, but
that it prevails,' and that to a considerable
extent, is a fact of which there can be no
sort of question. Many will rec ollect that
some ten or twelve years ago there prevailed
quite a mania for money digging, and at
intervals since we have heard of expeditions
of this character, but it has never ye come
to our knowledge that anybody has been
made richer through the instrumentality of
these nocturnal visits.
Yesterday we were informed that the
treasure seekers had been at work on the
premises of Mr. John S. Harrisa, at the
John A Sanders place, about four miles
from the city. Upon going out on his
grounds early in the morning he discovered
that several large holes had been dug du
ring the night; one of them in the lane
leading to the house being about nine and
a half feet deep. Around these holes were
the tracks of a number of persons and three
or four carts and mules. In the course of
his investigations he learned that the
searchers after "filthy lucre" spent, the
whole night in digging, but he haa been
unable to ascertain' the extent of theirvsuc-
cess, or obtain any clue to the identity of
those engaged in the enterprise.
