I ' Resolved, That (the Board of Audit and Finance concurring) the sum of $10,000 be appropriated for permanent street improve ments; that is to say, $6,000 to be expended in laying Belgian block from the north side of the Wc & W. R. R. depot on Nutt street down to Mulberry street and its cross ing to North Water street; and the sum of $4,000 for paving with Belgian block South Water street from the north side of Market (taking in the improvement of Market street dock) to Dock street. : . Resolved, That the Finance Committee of the Board of Aldermen can make the necessary arrangements to procure the mo ney at .a rate of interest not to exceed eight, per cent., and for such time as will enable, the Board of Aldermen to make the proper r provision for it in the -levy for the coming fiscal year; and provided, further, that it shall not increase the present rate of taxa tion. '. ". - ; , Mayor Hall warmly advocated the pas sage of the resolution, showing the abso lute necessity of the work ; stating that these two important highways, are now nearly impassable, and soon one, of them will be comp&tely so. ' He thought the city could easily pay for the improvement without increasing taxation one penny, uh asmuch as the Tjeasurer of the city ia now collecting the tax levied to pay for the $12,000 for laying North Water . street, besides $1,400 for other improvements, which will not have to be provided for nextyear. . c : Alderman Bear submitted an amendment that the property owners along the line of the contemplated improvement be assessed one sixth of the cost of the same. ' This was accepted by the mover of the resolu tlon. On motion of Alderman Giles, the mat ter was referred back to the committee, to report at the next meeting, giving the probable cost of the work. ---; - Further time was granted the'bommittee on Fire Department on bills of P. H. Hay den and McDougall & Bowden. The request of Wilmington Hook & Ladder Co. for harness was granted. Alderman Bear's' resolution that the Chief of Police be directed to make fre quent tests of the force of water furnished by the Water Works Co., and report any violation of the city's contract with the said company, was lost. . The Board adjourned at 11 o'clock.' Board of Audit and. Finance. This body met at the City Hall yesterday afternoon at 8 o'clock. Present: W. L Gore, chairman; Jno. W. Gerdts, Wm. Calder, R, J. Jones and C. F. YonCampen. The Chairman said he had called the Board together in advance of the usual hour of meeting for the purpose of consid ering the recommendation of the Board of Aldermen in regard to the proposed sub scription by the city to the extension of the Cape Yadkin Valley Railway to Wil mington. ' ; "' V " The recommendation of the Board of Al dermen was discussed at some length, when finally Mr. Calder moved that the matter be referred to a committee, to report to a called meeting of the Board.
