The victory in Virginia was very complete, and all over the land Dem ocrats are rejoicing. The, Richmond Dispatch says: . - "We Lavo got all that we claimed, and snore. A Democratic successor to Senator Mahone is secured, and our vie tory gives assurance that for four years at east the state will be at rest. it seems that Gen. McClellan did go to work on another volume, of personal reminiscences after his first nork was burned. It will be pub- tM soon. Here is what Gen." Fitz Join Porter says of it: . "The papers and records were all saved, and only a few weeks ago he was engaged on a description of the Peninsular cam paign. As to the book creating a stir, I cannot say, but it will be different from the want Johnson controversy. " Mr. uepew s natementa were not proven. . In (Jen. He Bays the recent elec- ? tions "give conclusive evidence that i.he Democrats have still ah even hance,if not more, to get the United rotates after March, 1887." This is incorrect. To tie the Republicans the Democrats must lose Tione and gam four. In Virginia there 1. is a ; gain of one. The opening cere monies will consist of an appropriate ad dress by Mayor Hall and instrumental mu sic. 1 he ladies ot St Thomas congrega tion have worked hard and faithfully for several months past for this fair, and a visit to the Hall to morrow night will show to what excellent - purpose they have worked. The Hall will be gaily festooned with ban ners and evergreens, and the tables will be filled with a large and beautiful variety of works of art- The refreshment feature of the fair will be one of the most attractive parts of the entertainment. There will be a spirited contest between the three fire' companies for a beautiful pitcher, and be tween the two bands for a handsome and valuable medal. There is also a beautiful hand painted lamp to be voted to the most, popular conductor. Altogether we can but expect that those Who pay the Catholic Fair a visit will be amply repaid therefor. TUe Favettevllle Fire. From our correspondent, "J. R.- M.," we have some additional particulars of the late fire in Fayetteville. The hotel build ing included, besides hotel property, two public halls, the clothing store of F. W. Thornton,-the -grocery stores of J, M. Lee and Charles Marsh; the office of the Sing er Machine Co., and the office of Gen, A. Q. Brady all of which were burned. The goods of Messrs. Thornton, Lee and Marsh were saved, but badly, damaged. . The fire had a damaging effect upon the Fair in progress there, many people takiD their departure on the first tram leaving the town. ' It is probable, says our correspendent, j that the hotel will be at once lebuilt, and it is thought that one of the handsomest structures of the kind in the State will be erected.
