What an arrant demagogue is Jeeraes. The largest jerolite in the world has been recovered by Prof. Eraerick, of Virginia. It fell in Washington county on the 14th of September, 1885. It weighs fully 200 tons. Ti joint discussion between Ba con and Gordon has been abandoned. This is well. It is very strange that two gallant gentlemen can not con duct a canvass like gentlemen. "Liar" and personal charges were flang around freely. Mr. Richmond Pearson and three friends were in Danville on the 19th mst. It aroused suspicion, and a duel between him and Mr. McAden beearae the town talk. The Virginia ' Ima-is, only some two miles from towB. Jennings Wise fought one of his duels near the line on the road to Yanceyville. Mr. McAden is in Catawba, looking after his milling interests, we judge. It is thought in London that the Home Rule prospects have improved. Mr. O'Connor says that most people expect it to pass its second reading. He even thinks better things. The case was heard by Judge Meares, yesterday afternoon at the Court House. His Honor after hearing argument of coun sel ordered the release of the ptieoner, on the ground that the "order of arrest was defective, in that It did not specify time and place for the return thereof." Col. A. M. Waddell appeared as counsel for Mr. Brown, and the plaintiff was represented by Col.B. R. Moore, who appealed from the de. cisioh of His Honor to the Supreme Court Base Ball. The Marion Club will arrive here on Monday morning and cross bats with the Seasides of this city at their grounds that afternoon. There is expectation of a lively game, with the chances of success somewhat in favor of the visitors. The South Carolina boys have been practicing quite hard, and, with tbe assistance of a professional bat tery, will play a fine game. The Seasides have been fighting against adverse circumstances, and, while not in as good trim as at this time last year, are nev verthelessin fair condition' and determined to play for all they are worth. Kurtz will aid them materially by his coolness and judgment, and inspire the despondent by Ills determination to win. Good playing can be ex pec ltd, and all Indications point to a large crowd at this, the opening game of the season. . A. Live Baby Show. The entertainment to be given this week, for the benefit of tbe Wilmington Light In fantry, promises to be a grand affair. New and unusual features will be presented.. Among these a baby show, to take place Friday afternoon, between 4 and 7 o'clock, a programme of which is advertised. A member of the corps says that "bashful mothers who have long believed their babies were handsome, but could get no one to afree wUh them, will have an opportunity now to right their grievances before a high minded and righteous court, consisting of three hlissful buoyant bachelors, uninflu enced by relationship, partisanship or part nership," A programme, setting forth the tempting attractions of the entertainment, will be announced hereafter. Wednesday night will begin the festivities. Cotton Receipt and Export.
