approached by Detective Mayer who offered
to give him $2.50 to go off and let the man
alone. He agreed to the proposition and

Very little additional - light has been
thrown upon the mysterious suicide of the
unknown man supposed to be one "W. G.
R. Frazor" from papers found on his per
son, tie could not have been in the city
ong, for ot the great number of persons,
boarding-house keepers, policemen and
others who looked at the body, not one re
membered ever seeing htm in the city be
fore the day of the suicide. It is known,
however, that he called at Mr. Yates' pho
tograph gallery and asked for work, about
o'clock Friday morning. Mr. Orr, ' in
charge of the gallery, told him that he had
nothing that he could give him,1 and sent
him across the street to Cronenberg's gal-
ery, where he was also unsuccessful in bis
application for work. The conductor who
came in on the W.,- C. & A. R. R. road
Friday morning says that from the descrip
tion he thinks the man was a passenger on
his train that morning.
Yesterday Morning' Fire.
A fire broke out about half-past one
o'clock yesterday morning in the Oil Works
of the Carolina Oil and Creosote Company,
at the foot of Church street The fire ori
ginated from sparks falling on the fhingle
roof of the shed over the retorts. It spread
rapidly and soon enveloped the whole shed
in flames. Beyond the destruction of this
and & few cords of lightwood, the damage
was slight. - There was no insurance on the
property. - All the fire engines were soon
on the ground and together extinguished
the flames. The hose cart of the Cape Fear
Company was the first to arrive, and pre
vented the fire spreading until the remain
der of the department got to work. The
shed will he rebuilt at once and work con
tinued.

Mr. Editor: In your report of the pro
ceedings of .the Board of Aldermen held
on the 12th inst., you quote me as favoring
the resolutions proposing to appoint the
Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railroad com
mission on account or discrimination ot
rates to this place by the Wilmington &
Weldon Railroad, &c. I think my brother
Aldermen will bear me out in the statement
that my position at that and former meet
ings, was mat wnue i was not preparea,
with information before me, to favor a sub
scription to the railroad, yet I deemed the
matter or sucn importance as to require
great consideration at -our hands, and
thought it advisable to appoint the corn
mission that they might treat with the
Cape Fear & Yadkin. Valley people and be
in position to encourage the road to be
built here if it could be done on terms tha
would be of advantage to our town.
I had implicit confidence in the commis-
sion and still believe that such a body as
Wm. L. DeRosset, B. G. Worth, Jas. H.
Chadbourn, - Roger Moore and B. F. Hall
would not recommend or commit any act
detrimental to the interest of our tax
payers. Very respectfully.
