Scales has offered a reward of $400 for the arrest of Charles L. Heitman, of Lexing ton, who is charged with embezzlement. Winston Republican: Mr. C. C. Stoltz, of Bethania township, had the misfortune to lose a barn of tobacco by fire on the 28th inst. ' The building was new and the entire loss is placed at $300. - Salisbury Watchman: MrsI Lucy Ludwick, an aged lady living in Lilaker township, lost her dwelling and all its contents last Sunday afternoon, while she and ber daughter, the only occupants of the place, were visiting a sick neighbor. Durham Plant: The town council for the town of Durham have em ployed Mr: Arthur Winslow to take charge of the grading of the streets and fixing the proper grades for the sidewalks, and. pro vide for a sewerage system and the water mams of the town. - . Charlotte Chronicle: The most encouraging reports still continue to cr me in as to the growth of tobacco in Mecklen burg county, It must be remembered that this the first attempt to raise anything like a crop in this county, and the success which has thus far attended the effort should be very encouraging to our farmers. Charlotte Observer : Gen. R. D. Johnston returned to the city yesterday from a visit to Birmingham, Ala., and we understand that be contemplates removing willi his family to that nlace to reside, though he has as yet arrived at no definite conclusion. Shejhad filled a jar and put in a window, and when she went to remove it to a shelf the jar burst scattering the con tents over her hand and arm. - Last Saturday morning Abram ' Stout, one of the railroad hands on the Jamestown sec tion, fell from the hand car near James town and was instantly crushed to death. This is the second fatal accident which has happened near High Point within a short time, and both victims bore the name of Stout. A man by the name of Hill, whose borne is in Randolph, jumped into a well a few days ago. A bucket was let down and he was drawn nearly to the top when he turned loose and fell back. This was repeated. Finally they were obliged to send a -man clown into the well to bring him out. His mind is affected. . Raleigh News- Observer: Hen derson has a handsome new Episcopal church,- During September sixty drummers' licenses were issued from the State Treasury. At Franklin ton, a few days past, memorial services were held in honor of the late Rev. Moses A. Hop kins, colored minister to Liberia. The col ored people conducted these : exercises. They will erect a monument to the memo ry of the late minister. - Not long ago some persons at Warren Plains threw stones at an excursion train on the Raleigh ds Gas ton railroad, and smashed a window. Two neeroes were caotured. Convicted of the of fence and sentenced by Judge Gudgerto the penitentiary. A man who changed the inspector's marks on the ends ot railway ties was also convicted of that offence and properly punished. Attempts are be ing made to organize a military company at Hendersonville. That at Waynesville is the only one west of the Blue Ridge. The election by the faculty of the Univer sity of Prof. E, A. Clarke, of Amherst Court House, Va.. has accepted WILMINGTON, N;C, TUESDAY, OCTOBER .5, 1886, the call of the Episcopalians to take charge of this parish, and will enter on bis duties the first Sunday in November. Last year was tho first when the $30,000 pension appropriation made, by the last Legislature was disbursed. There were paid last year 2,034 pensions. This year, . which began September 1st, there have been 207 new ap plications for pensions, , of which 127 have been allowed. This number added to the number paid in 1885 makes a total of 2.161. Mr. Leander Moore, a well- known cotton bujer in this city some years ago, died in St. Louis, Mo., on the 30th of September last. During the war he was a Lieutenant in Company ' E, Third North Carolina Infantry. The sparrows have all returned to their nesting places on the capitals of the pillars at the entrance to the City Hal), which is taken as an indication that earth quake shocks for this season have ended. The time fixed by the Board of County Commissioners for the election on the question of Subscribing $100,000 to the W., O. & E. O. Railroad the fourth Thursday in March is the day upon which the election for Aldermen is to be held. - The many friends of Mr. K. K. Council in this city will regret to learn of his sudden death from heart disease at his residence near Coutcils, on the Carolina Central Railroad, Saturday night last. For a number of years he has been an official and prominent member of the Methodist E. Church South, and has many friends in various parts of the State. Superior Court. -. Nixon were re - -quired to give bond yesterday in the sum of $100 each' for theif appearance at the "next term of the' Criminal Court. ' The two men engaged in an affray Sunday afternoon, near the corner of Sixth and Swann streets. Nixon' it is alleged, attempted to cut Evans witha knife, when the latter drew a pistol "of the.bull-dog pattern" and fired twice at Nixon bnt missed. Jurors were drawn for the next term of the Criminal Court The Wilmington, Onslow & East Caro lina Railroad matter thee came up, and it was ordered that in answer to the petition presented to the Board, an election will be held on the fourth Thursday of March, 1887 at the usual polling places in the county for the purpose of determining whether or not a subscription of $100,000 shall be made by the county. Thirty days' notice of the time and place of holding the said election shall be given by publication. and the returns. theieof shall be made and the results declared and certified as pre scribed by law in other elections. Present, Mayor Hall and Aldermen Bear, Boney, Worth, Dudley, Doscher, Howe and McEachern. Committee on Streets and Wharves rc- ported on the petition for improvement of Front and Second Btreeta.betweeuDawson and Kidder, and also on petition for im provement of Seventeenth street from Mar ket to Bellevue Cemetery, that the teams and street force could not be spared from other work, but as soon as possible these places would receive attention. In the matter of sewer from Jacobs' 1 spring, a letter was read from Mr. Chase, estimating the cost of necessary improve ments at $4,500, and recommending that the work be done'. The matter was refer red back to the Committee on Streets and Wharves, with iostiuctions to confer with the Board of Audit and Finance as to the cost of the work, and report at the next meeting with plans for the improvement. Alderman Boney from the Market . Com mittee, made a verbal report as to the rent ing of market stalls, &c Further time was asked by the commit tee on Streets and Wharves in regard to the matter of appointing a city engineer. It is supposed tbey were poisoned. Several dead cats were seen in and about the place Sun day, also.
