He believed that nine tenths of the people would prefer a situa tion for the pnblro building that would build upend improve aome neglected part of the city, and urged the selection of the aits on the vacant lot on Third street near tha City Hall; the property could be bought cheap, there were no buildings, to remove and it waa convenient to business. In reply to a question by Mr. Linton, who asked if a good foundation could be bad, Mr. Strange said that be thought it could: that the difference in coat would more than pay for the expense of prepsring a founda tion. In answer to a question from OoL Roger Moore, Mr. Strange admitted that lbs situation was considered unhealthy. Mr. D. L. Gore thought that the proper location fcr the building waa on Front, at some paint belwten Mat kat street and the . .railroad d epot. Capt. W. M. Parker aaid that the church and board of tiusieea of the M. E. Church offered a desirable local lop on Front street, corner of Walnut, and " argued the advan tages of the situation aa a site for the pub. lie building. Mr. W. P. Oldham aaid that he had a place on Thirteenth street, rive acres in ex- tent, that he would like to offer, if a con- vealent location was not sought; he would offer it to the government for $15,000 snd give them a boons of $10,000 if they would buy it. He thought the tendency of the community was In the direction of Oakdale Cemetery any way. In view of the en forcement of the civil service law he thought the unhealthy characteristics of the lot on Third street should be a recommen dation . Mr R. H. McEoy thought that the wishes Of other people in the community than the business men should also be con sulted. Froat street north of Market had advantages; property was spprecialing in value, while south of Market property was depreciating. Mr. W. W. Shaw spoke in favor of the selection of the M. E. Church lot on Front street. He said that the drainage of the lot on Third street advocated by Mr. Strange was bad; the sewer was over crowded, and the city had now a suit on hand resulting from this. Mr. P. L. Brldgers said that the business mea desired to b in close communication with the postofficet. He favored the selec tion of a site on Front street north of Mar ket. Mr. Jacobl thought Third street the most suitable place for the publio building oa the lot north of and adjoining the City Hall lot " Mr. George Kelly argued In favor of the M. E. church lot on Front street.
