We have been driving the pen for forty years and we never wrote the first line of even a. short story yet. It requires very marked and peculiar gifts to write a novel really worth reading. Miss Fisher has written a few enjoyable novels, and sheonly among our na tive writers, that can stand upon their own merits; but no one ever supposed that they exhibited any genius.
