Wilmington: "One of the solid men,
physically, mentally and financially,
who find much comfort and recupera

stay in Saratoga, is Mr. R. R.
Bridgers, of North Carolina, presi
dent of the Wilmington and We ldon
and the Wilmington, Columbia and
Augusta railroads, compromising two
trunk lines of about 400 miles, with
nearly 200 miles of laterals. Mr.
Bridgers has been coming to Saratoga
for twenty years, stopping sometimes
at one hotel and again at others. He
is now taking his ease with dignity
at the Kenmore, where he has been a
guest for several weeks."

N. C, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1887.
Josephine BXeKlreyv ;
. Josephine McElroy alias Rose Nes
bitt, the colored washerwoman who
absconded two weeks ago, and was
subsequently arrested In New York
and brought back to this city, ar
riving last Friday night, was arraign
ed before Mayor Fowler yesterday af
ternoon at the City Hall, charged
with embezzlement of clothing be
longing to Mr. C. C. Covington. At
the conclusion of the hearing she was
committed to jail, in default of $200
baiL
The witnesses in attendance at the
hearing were Mr. and Mrs. Covington,
Mr. De Lancey Evans, and Mrs. Ward.
They all identified Josephine as the
woman to whom they had given
clothes to wash that were never re
turned. Mr. Covington had a list of
175 pieces that she had carried off. A
large trunk that the woman took
with her to New York and which was
brought back by officer Skipper, was
unlocked and its contents spread
upon a table in the court room. The
trunk was filled to its utmost capaci
ty and nearly every article in it was
identified either as the property of
Mr. Covington or Mrs. Ward.
This thieving washerwoman, who
has created a decided sensation in
domestic circles, is a small, rather
delicate-looking mulatto, about
twenty-five years of age, and of quiet
demeanor. In reply to a ques
tion, whether she had anything to
say, she answered "no," and when
asked why she carried the clothes
away with her, said that she had se
cured a situation in New York after
she had taken the clothes to wash
and she did not want to return
them.
The woman's little girl, a child
about three years of age, was seated
on her knee during the trial, munch
ing an apple. After her committal
j to jail was ordered, a number of col
ored women made application for
the child, but the sheriff decided to
wait until Monday before determin
ing the matter. The other child, a
boy of five or six years, has been
placed with a colored man named
Haynes.
What Wilmington Cotton Bayers are
Doing.
Under the head "A Nut for Cotton
Men to Crack," the Charleston News
and Courier prints the following
"I tell you what it is," said a local
official of the Atlantic Coast Line to
a reporter for the News and Courier.
yesterday, "Wilmington is going to
push Charleston mighty close for cot
ton this year. As things stand at
present. She IS drawincr cotton from I
rlcht under Charleston none, and it I
is not railroad discrimination that s
doing it, either. She has sent her
cotton buyers over into South Caro
lina, and they are now at work on
Charleston's stamping grounds, buy
ing cotton which ought to come here,
and shipping it to Wilmington.
"As a matter of fact, to my knowl
edge, Wilmington has at the present
time two cotton buyers stationed at
BishoDville. who are buviner cotton
for Wilmington shippers, and yet
tnere is not a single buyer mere rrom
Charleston, although Bishopville be
longs properly to our district. How
can Charleston exnect to fret this cot

there to buy it ? Bishopville is the
