C, Oct. 15, 1887. To the Editor of the Wilmington Star: .Sib In your isssae of the 13th inst. I notice a piece copied from the New York Worldy headed "Negroes in England." The writera state-: ments are totally incorrect. Re spectable English men and women do not associate with the African negro. You will rarely ever see a negro hr England except in the low, back slums of a seaport town, of which -the most part of - them are sailors. The writer may have possi bly seen a well dressed woman walk ing with a negro,'-but I should be very sorry to vouch for her respecta bility . ; -V-V X The writer says "it is common enough to see negro women attended. by clean cut, good looking English men." The description of those said respectable Englishmen is vague. But I say that it is very 'uncommon to see negroe's in England at all, ex cept, as I have before stated, sea port towns.' In all my travels through the united kingdom I never saw outside of the- sea-ports but one negro and that was at a London rail way station. Indeed a negro man or woman out side of Iondon and - the principal shipping towns of England would be a perfect cariosity. lhe writer also sayB: "Having nearly the entire population of Eng land to pick and choose from they have naturally shown a discrimina tion against their own color." Has this writer really the audacity to state that a negro can so over to England and pick and choose just whom he pleases for his associates. Again, any one who has studied the negroe's habits in this country will know that he would 'much rather associate with his own color than with any others. I enclose my card. ' - Aw Englishman. Republican Tariff Reform Sentiment In the Northwest. St. Paul Pioneer Press, Rep. Of the over four thousand articles now taxed, many might be placed on the free list with as much benefit as was felt from the abolition of the du ty on quinine. The wayfaring man cannot err in the way that leads to a reduction of the surplus. The politician-will not, if he has any concep tion of public sentiment on this ques tion, and of the influence which it will exercise in thS elections of the next year. OCR STATE CONTEMPORARIES. The Chronicle is f nllv reconstructed and believes the negro ought to be denied none o f his ' legal x rights. , - It - has f nevertheless Hpn Biirnrininir to ns that in the nlrl Demo cratic county of Catawba, the directors of the fair offered a premium or?3 w in goia, onrh to thi . nreltififit : white and. the nret tiest colored baby.
