The theory that it is not right of man nor of his law to take the life of him who wilfully takes the life of another has long since been exploded, and the opposition to capital punishment now place their strength upon the assertion that im prisonment is equally effectual in deter ring such crime. They claim that impri sonment is coequal or perhaps better. They suppose that a number of impres sions, frail and insignificant in themselves, diffused over a long period of time, pro duce a stronger effect than a single object, however powerful and terrible, presented at once. This is in direct contravention to every principle of human nature. It holds out more of an inducement to the criminal than a dread.- The assurance that the murderer shall not be put to death would inevitably solicits crime. It would make murderers out of common fiends and turn . our prisons and penitentiaries injt homes for?almo8t numberless culprits. As a cele brated lawyer once remarked, "to abolish the death penalty would in effect, if not in design, proclaim impunity to murder." Greenville Standard. ' COTTON. N. Y. Commercial and Financial Chronicle New Yobk, Nov. 11. The move ment of the crop, as indicated by par telegrams from the South to-night, is given .below. For the week end ing this evening (Nov. 11) the tota receipts have reached 301,600 bales, against 289,174 bales last week, 294, 934 bales the previous week, and 271,799 bales three weeks since mak ing the total receipts since the 1st of Sept., 1887, 2,340,345 bales, against 1,899,016 bales for the same period of 1886, showing an increase since Sept. 1, 1887, of 451,329 bales. The exports for the week ending this evening reach a total of 192,666 bales, of which 91,249 werssto Great Britain, 30,569 to France and 70,848 to the rest of the Continent. Yesterday the market opened weak but on the reading of the Bureau re port, estimating the crop at 6,300,000 bales, there was the greatest excite ment, and a qaick advance of 50 to 60 points, a small part of which was subsequently lost. To-day the re port was viewed with so much dis trust that although Liverpool re ported a great advance, this market declined materially, under sales to realize, some parties patting out short contracts with great freedom. Cotton on the spot has been gener ally quiet, but on Monday was more active for export at 3-16c. advance and yesterday there was a farther improvement of 71 6c. To-day the market was dull and weak at 10 7-1 6c for middling uplands. The total sales for forward deliv ery for the week are 1,195,900 bales. soumEititnms.
