CURRENT COMMENT. " It is not veil either to abol ish or reduce internal revenue taxa tion; it is a tax upon whiskey, beer and tobacco, things which are in a very email measure necessary to the .health or happiness of mankind; if they are necessary to any unfortu nate man, they are far less necessary lo; him than are a thousand other articles which the Government taxes. .This tax is the least burdensome, the least unjust of all the taxes which the government lays or can lay upon the people Secretary Fairchild. - The platform adopted by the Republican. Club Convention ooming upon the heels of the Blaine pronun- ciamento, will give the country a pretty fair idea of the issues which the'party out of power is about to advocate in the hope of defeating the party in power. The maintenance of the present tariff is' the first one. No where in this new Republican creed is there a single suggestion as to when or how there shall be tariff re-' vision or surplus redaction; bat all through the mass of misstatement false assumption is the determination to stand by the tariff J net as it is. 1 he next and the only other plank of importance, is an indirect indorse ment of that abomination, the Blair Educational bill, for whose defeat the Clabbers justly give' credit to a Democratic. House of Representa tives. Washington jfost, JJem. ' -The talk about the tax1 falling on the farmer is the merest bosh, as the farmer does not pay a cent of the tax directly or indirectly. Apro pos to this, please give us an answer to the following: The United States consume half of the tobacco crop and export the other half. The half which is used in the united StateB, and pays the internal revenue tax, is selling 200 to 400 per cent, higher than the half which is exported, without paying a cent of theHax. It is also tune that the yield t&js year of the export kinds was even smaller relatively than that of the kind con sumed at home. The State of Ken tucky, to which the Tribune takes the liberty of referring, is the pro ducer annually of 60 per cent, of the crop of the United States, and her styles of tobacco which stay at home and pay that terrible revenue tar sheds selling at $9 to $35 per 100 pounds,, while the kind she exports tax free she is selling at $3 to $8.00, except a relatively small specialty, none of which sell half as high as corresponding grades of the other. 1 Ztouisville Courier-Journal JDem.
