J-Republican State Conventions
,vere held in Massachusetts and
Pennsylvania yesterday for the selec

derstood to strongly favor Blaine's
nomination. Yesterday's of
ferings of government bonds ag
gregated $3,032,000. A bulle
tin issued yesterday morning
says Emperor Frederick passed a
good night, and that his condition is
satisfactory. Negro troubles pre
vail at Bessemer, Ala., and fears were
prevalent Monday night that the
town would be burned; a late tele
gram, however, reports all quiet, but
a feverish apprehension still prevails
that the trouble is not ended.
The high school building at Concord,

the children escaped in safety -.
The asgregate of bonds accepted to

The Southern Immigration Conven

from a number of Southern States,
including many distinguished per
sons. Very cold weather is re

and it is thought the fruit crop is
ruined. A murder and suicide are
reported from Nelsonville, Ohio, and
in Rochester, N. T., a man killed his
wife from jealousy, and then at
tempted to kill himself. A war of
extermination has been declared in
Manchester, N. H., against all liquor
dealers, and a number of places have
been raided by the league for the
suppression of the liquor traffic.

Democratio Senators received an
unfavorable impression from the fact
that Minister Phelps, who is a candi
date for Chief Jnstice, paid a visit to
the Senate, the body that is to confirm
or reject. A Washington special to the
Charleston News and Courier says:
"The Democratic Senators tm a ml

by several of them, he failed to create a fa-

Queen Victoria and Emperor

and this causes the N. T. Vforld to

King Richard Ccenr de Lion was
imprisoned by Dake Leopold of
Austria and the Emperor of Ger

A very remarkable case is being
tried in New York city. Rev. E.
Walpole Warren is before the court
as an "imported" clergyman. Trinity
Chnrch is charged with violating the
statute forbidding importation of
"contract labor," and that choicest
city pulpits are invaded by foreign
preachers. This is a test case of a
foolish law. If found gnilty the de
fendant is liable to be mulct for
$1,000.

It is abont time to make ar

is every indication that the city will

some of the proprietors of boarding

A New Hallroad.
Mr. George A. Ramsay, one of Pen
der's most enterprising citizens, has
perfected arrangements to build a
railroad from Burgaw, on the Wil
mington & Weldon road, to Jackson
ville, in Onslow county. The road is
an assured fact and will be built this
summer, we are told. Although only
twenty-eight miles in length its com
pletion will tend to' the development
of a large section of the most fertile
and valuable farming lands in the
State, which for want of means of
transportation and lack of communi
cation with business centres are now
lying idle and unproductive.
In connection with this railroad en
terprise a Land and Improvement
Company has been formed, for the
purpose of opening up the country to
settlement and affording inducements
for a desirable class of immigrants.
Truck farming is one of the Industries
that the road is expected to promote,
and which it is believed the country
is admirably adapted to, early fruits
and vegetables maturing here almost
as soon as the crops of the truckers in
the neighborhood of Savannah, Ga.,
with the advantage of being in easy
reach of the Northern markets.
