The workmen are pushing ahead rapidly upon the new hotel, which will be a substantial and roomy building. The gangway to connect the Hummocks with the'banks of the ocean is being constructed. The stock of goods in the store, with all Mr. Croom's books and papers were also burned. The loss on stock is estimated at f 1,- 500, on which there was insurance for $1,000. The building was owned by Mr. Jno. A. Jones of Long Creek, and cost probablylflve or six hundred dol lars. It was not insured. The cause of the fire is not known. BeT. B. s. naraa, k d. The Wilmington District Con ference of the Methodist E. Church South -will convene at Richlands, Ons low county, on the 29th of August. The Sylvan Qrove will run her regular Friday schedule to-day, leav ing at 8.30 a. m. and 2.30 p. m. There will be music for dancing on the boat. The ladies of the congregation of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church are making arrangements to jtfve an excursion to Wrightsville Sound by the Sea coast Railroad Fri day week. Miss Cacnie Chasten (not Min nie Chasten) was the organist who rendered. Chopin's MarcTie Funebre at the memorial exercises in honor of the dead Kaiser in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Wednesday night. The Stab office was favored with a serenade last night by Dick Fleming and John Hayes Fleming's Bad Boy's Band. They make capital music, although their instruments are only a guitar and two mouth-organs. Mr. George M. Carr, postal clerk on the route from this city to Washington, D. C, died yesterday in that city. His remains will be brought to Wallace's, Duplin county, this eve ning for interment. Mr. Carr was well known in Wilmington, where he had many warm friends. Bishop Granberry, who is to preside at the next session of the North Carolina Carolina Annual Con ference has, by request, changed the time for the meeting of that body one week later, so that instead of meeting on the 21st day of November it will meet on the 28th of November. Big Biaaa A Sampson Indaatry. A correspondent of the Stab, writ ing from .Warsaw, says: This place is now on a boom in the whortleberry industry. Last Saturday shipments of 850 crates were made to New York and Philadelphia, and altogether 3,- 500 crates about thirty-five hundred bushels have been shipped to North ern markets. The principal shippers here are Mr. Isaac Brown and Messrs. Smith & Bowden, who have their hands full of work in attending to the business. It is estimated that lhe shipments this season will reach fully 10,000 bushels. Any one not familiar with this industry .would be surprised to know of .its magnitude. The ladies of Pender county, at the reunion of veterans of Company K, Third N. C. State Troops, held at Six Forks, near Bnrgaw on the 9 th inst., organized a Memorial Associa tion, for the purpose of erecting a monument at Burgaw to the memory of heroes of the Lost Cause. Mrs. H. F. Murphy was called to the chair and Mrs. EL Porter was re quested to act as secretary. Tne ooiect or tne meetine was explained by Dr. E. Porter to be for the formation of a Me morial Association for Pender, to secure funds, and to erect a monu ment to her gallant dead, at Burgaw. An interesting game of base ball was played yesterday at the Seaside grounds between the Clarendon and the Acme Clubs, resulting as follows : Clarendon, 21; Acme, 2. Both clubs played well, but the Clarendons scored their runs for the most part by hard hitting and sharp base run ning.
