The following are the rules which will govern the contests in the Fire- men's Tournament, to be held in this city on weanesaay, xnursaay ana I Friday, August 15tb, 16th and 17th : HOOK AST) ULDDER COZSTESTS. Section 1. Trucks run by hand will be allowed not to exceed 46 men, Sec 2. Trucks run by horses will be allowed not to exceed 10 men for tour- nainent. Sec. 3. Trucks must be in same con dition as when ready for fire practice. Sec. 4. All trucks will rank as one class, without regard to weight. Sec 5. Trucks run by hand will run 100 yards. Trucks run by horses will run 200 yaras, raise a tnirty root lad der, man ascend to top, descend and I wnen ready for fire practice, time to be called when truck is loaded. Sec. 6. Each company shall be re quired to carry full line of equip ments on truck. See 7. No company is allowed to assist another in the ran, and each company is required to furnish roll I of runners to Secretary on the morn I?Fowf allowed to form a truck team. STKXMKR CONTESTS. All steamers will take their posi tion on river front at same time Reasonable time will be allowed to get suction overboard and fuel ar ranged Each engineer will select his own fuel. If coal is desired it will be furnished free by Wilmington department. Time will be taken when the word fire is given. Each steamer contesting'must show one fuil gauge, of cold water. The Weather, Yesterday was the hottest day of the season hotter than the day be fore by two-tenths of a degree, ac cording to the record kept at the Sig nal office and at the same time the heat was very oppressive. There was a heavy shower about 1 p. m., but it did not cool the atmosphere. The average maximum temperature in this district of the cotton region as reported by the Signal service was I 98 degree, made up from the follow- i ing reports: Lumberton, Florence, I Cheraw and Goldsboro, 100 degrees; I Wadesboro, Charlotte and Ne'wbern, 98; Raleigh, 96;Wilmington, 95 2-10ths, and Weldon 93. The average maximum temperature in the other districts in the cotton region ranged from 94 to 98 degrees. TARSORQ ROOMING. Star Correspondence. Tarboro, N. C.,August 4th, 1888. Mr. J. F. Shackleford has complet ed his brick Ibuilding, (knitting fac tory) and will place in his machinery by the 15th inst. Mr. O. C Farrar, now at the .North, has purchased machinery for the cot ton factory for 6,000 spindles, and work will commence on tne building as soon as he returns, about the 10th inst. The canning establishment and other industries will soon begin to show up their buildings. in tne boom and by far not tne least is the graded school, which will open later on.
