Hon. A. H. Colquitt was yesterday re-elected U. S. Senator from Georgia; jlr Grady refused to be a candidate. The government has given direc tions relative to the destruction and disinfection of bedding, clothing.etc, in Jacksonville, subject to an ordi lunce of the city council. About five hundred ana nicy Daies 01 cowuu .-re damaged by the fire on board tbe steamer Elphinstone, at Charles- ton. A farmer's family in Alabama was poisoned b y food prepared by a ne. gro, and some of them may die. The proceedings yesterday in the General Assembly of the Knights ot Labor show that Powderly is the con trolling power in the order; every de mand made by him has been con ceded, and by a majority exceeding the required two-thirds; there is much work before the Convention, and it is expected the rest of the week will be occupied. There was an interest ing debate in the English Parliament on the Land Purchase bill, in which Mr. John Dillon took a prominent part; he was loudly cheered through out. Nearly a million votes were cast in Pennsylvania for President; Harrison's plurality is 79 571, and ma vrity over all 54,958. Two rail road wrecks are reported, one in Ohio and one in Wyoming, in which a large number of persons were injured, but only one fatally, an-old lady. Twenty two new cases of fever in Jacksonville yesterday and one death ; three new cases at Gainesville. The official vote ot Alabama for Pre sident shows that Cleveland received 117,310, and Harrison 57,197. A company of Connecticut capitalists, with large resources, have made ex tensive purchases on the Tennessee river, which will result in the dou bling of the river facilities, the open ing of mines and great agricul tural developments. New York market reports : Money easy at 23 per cent.; cotton steady; mid dling uplands 10 cents; middling Or leans 1(H cents; southern flour heavy at $3 35 6 65; wheat dull and lower; o. 2 red November $1 04; corn it lower and steady; No. 2 November 48 cents; spirits turpentine steady and qmet; rosin dull. There are said to be 151 advocates of it in the Cnni-y r of Depaties. Gen. Harrison writes to the Au gusia Chronicle that be holds his views subject, to change and modifi cation. Blaine will do his thinking for him probably. I he Rock Island Railroad will be gio to ran steam heated cars this eek. Others mast follow as the command has been given that the "cir stove must go." "IndigDant" complains in the New York Tribune that at a Sixth Avenue oyster house her maid could not be fcrved. Here is discrimination on ccount of color. All the churches ake the same discrimination and the chief theatres. .s . The South Pole is said to be fuller f dangers than the North Pole. A Sooth Polar expedition is to be or ganized in Europe. If so, then oth will have to be organized to go : 10 earch of those goiDg before. The fUiM of the North Pole expedi t,0C8 will be probably repeated. In Connecticut, as in the other States, this disgraceful intimidation was worked and with damage to the Democracy. Manu facturers compelled their employes to vote as they voted. The follow ing we copy for the benefit of South- ern workingmen, who can see how it fares among their fellows in the great North. The New York Star says: "The last number of the Connecticut Borne gives ao account of the wholesale inti midation practiced throughout that State by the manfacturera to make their emploj e3 vote for Harrison and Morton. It cites particularly the case of the owners of the Willimantic mills, whose superintendents and foremen resorted to the most contemp tible espionage to see that none of their Democratic employes cast their ballots for Cleveland . It was all the more marked be cause, according to the officers' statements, the mills have never been so flourishing as daring the past four years." President Cleveland is hot afraid. He has a backbone. The news from Washington continues that he will send Congress a vigorous, outspoken document, and that his Tariff Re form ideas will be repeated with em phasis. The Washington special to the Baltimore Sun says: "Mr. Cleveland ia not the man to aban don any principle which he believes to be jaet and well founded because of tempora ry obstacles. It can be assumed con 11 dently, therefore, that he will take back nothing he said ia his message of Decem ber last. But unlike that paper, the forth coming message will treat of several other important topics in addition. It will be his aim to transmit to Congress as the last of hia annual communications the best document that has ever emanated from his pen." ItEV ADVERTISEMENTS. M un son Now for overcoats. 8. The young ladies of the city are respectfully invited to attend the lecture by Dr. Pritchard on Friday night. We are assured that the Doc tor will give his hearers a literary treat. Branson's almanac for 1889 has been received from the publishers. It claims to be as good as the best. It seems, as heretofore, to be compiled with great care, and must be a great conyenience in every household where it is used. It has been published reg ularly for twenty-two years. Criminal coart. But little business was transacted in this Court yesterday, the greater part of the day being consumed in the ef fort to obtain a jury In the case of W H.Nash and others charged with as sault and battery. The venire of for ty or fifty summoned the day before was finally exhausted, and the Court ordered another venire, of forty, to be drawn and summoned for to-dajT at 9 a m., and the trial of the case was continued until that time. A machine for welding cut bale ties and parts of ties has been perfected by the Thompson Electric . Company. Each weld is made in less than five seconds, the amount of horse-power required is very small, and the metal at the weld is fully as strong as at any other part of the tie. By means of this machine cut ties can be easily united, and the pieces which accumu late at the compresses made very quickly into proper lengths for use. The machine cannot fail to be of great value throughout the South. Cut band ties at present are worth less except as scrap iron. They are passed between rollers whioh straight en them out, and are then welded, and submitted to a chemical bath, wbdLh gives them a bright, clean look, after which they are to be put in bundles and shipped to various points in the South. No Smoking Allowed. The city ordinance against smok ing cigars, pipes or cigarettes in the streets near the cotton compresses is not generally known, but it is still on the books and will be rigidly en forced. Yesterday a colored man named Samuel Larington was brought before the Mayor for viola tion of this ordinance, and after a hearing was discharged under a sus pension of judgment and upon the payment of costs. Last Sunday morning the watch man at tne Wilmington Compress discovered fire among some bales out side of the building, which it is sup posed was caused by some one smok ing a oigar or pipe. No alarm was given, the fire being easily extin guished with a few buckets of water. Four bales of cotton were slightly damaged Assaulting- I.1U1 Bojc. Frank Spicer. a colored youth the police were looking for last Saturday for assaulting little white boys on the streets, was arrested and brought be fore Mayor Fowler yesterday. There were several witnesses against the prisoner one, who had .been struck with a stone thrown by Spicer, ap -pearing with one of his eyes severely bruised. Spicer was convicted of the charge of disorderly conduct, and was sentenced to thirty days' imprison ment in default of payment of a fine of twenty dollars. Tbe Row in tne Hollow. Herman Slavao, a runner for Mrs. Bryson's boarding house on Nutt street, was arraigned before Mayor Fowler yesterday for assault, and bat tery on Chris. Anderson, a Norwe gian sailor. Anderson was present at the trial as a witness against the de fendant, with his face very much bat tered and bruised. At the conclusion of the hearing, the Mayor sent Slavao before the Criminal Court under a bond for $50.
