There was an interesting debate in the Senate yesterday on the question of the tenure of the President pro temjyore. which was participated in by Messrs. George, Turpie, Reagan, Evarts and Butler; a large number of nominations were confirmed in ex ecutive session. The Fall River weavers have decided to return to work on the old basis, and all of the mills will be in full operation to-day. Another unsuccessful bal lot was taken in the Rhode Island Legislature yesterday for United States Senator. Work along the Panama canal has entirely ceased, and the West India negroes are rap idly returning to their ' homes. The President issued a proclamation yesterday, opening the Oklahoma lands to settlement on April 22d next A number of nominations were sent to the Senate yesterday by the President, among which were two forirNorth Carolina. A destructive fire occurred yesterday In West Ha ven, Conn. Mr. John Bright died in London yesterday morning; his end was peaceful and painless. The extensive machine shops and foundry of Mcintosh & Hemphill, in Pittsburg, were destroyed by fire yes terday morning, causing a loss of $100,000; the fire is believed to have been the work of incendiaries, and four men have been arrested on (suspicion. The negro exodus rolls on with gathering force. Pope Leo's fainting fits are becom ing more frequent. Obly 78 towns out of 228 in New Hampshire voted for Prohibition. Most of the Northern papers are lidiculing Fred Grant's appointment Jacksonville, Fla., is sorely afflict ed with an organiied gang of thieve. Dr. R. M. Gitling, the eminent in ventor born in North Carolina, is now 70 jears old. Report ssys that Wanamaker shoots off his mouth more than any member of the Harrison happy fam ily. At Monte Carlo, the gambling centre in Europe, there have been 15 duels and 16 suicides thus far dur ing 1889. It begins to look as if Blaine was not as big a man as was supposed, and that he is not such a power be hind the throne after all. Julia Marlowe, the gifted and handsome young actress, is follow ing the other actresses, and is all broken up by overwork. The Tory party is not only losing its grip upon the country, but in Par liament. Its former majority of nearly 100 has fallen to 80. The New Bern Journal, edited by Gen. Cullen Battle, is good enough to say; "The Wilmington Star, the beat and brightest of newspapers. &cv The Richmond Dispatch wiaely favors a change in postal laws allow ing a person to paste a newspaper tutting on a postal card. There can be no sound objection to this reform. Rev. Mr. Lewis's very short story is being read around town. It is pithy, brief and pointed to those who catch the drift. It is very handsome; 17 got up at 50 cents a copy. Bishop. Potter introduces it favorably and u fact gives the key to the story in a 'ew lines. . The f Moiffil" . . - - - VOL. XLIV. NO. 5. Thq Charleston News and Courier thinks it Is now North Carolina's op portunity to give employment to the thirty thousand white laborers in Illinois desiring work in this State. It says of the exodus: "Their departure, however, occasions' a temporary inconvenience only to the white people among whom they lived, and if their places can be supplied with white imml grant, of a deairable class. North Caroli na will be permanently benefited by the substitution. The wise plan for our neighbors to pursue would appear to be to encourage the exodus which they 'have bees resisting; so stoutly and so blindly. and to open their gates and doors to all of the thirty thousand Illinois farmers for whom they can find room." tTime is decreasing. Let us see. Turning to a Southern daily of Tues day, in less than one column, we find that an infuriated husband in Ken tucky beat his wife, shot a man who remonstrated, and got mortally wounded in return; a mad husband in Indianapolis shot a man he found in his house talking with his wife; in West Virginia a man killed his mother-in-law; a fight reported in Kentucky and two men killed; in Georgia two negroes armed and de fied a posse sent to take them. The Georgians are agitating the building of a railroad from Colum bia, S. C, to Savannah. The Netoa says: "The people along the line of the pro jected road recognizes its importance to them, and are ready to do what they can for it. Between 8avannah and Barnwell Court House, 8. C. $50,000 has been aub- ECribed. The projected road is one that will be of vast benefit to Savannah. Tbe line of it is through a well settled and pros peroua section of South Carolina, the people of which now do tneir trading with Uhar les ion." The Newton Enterprise had nearly a column editorial on Wilmington. It kindly closed with these words: "We hope before the close cf this gene ration to see Wilmineton tbe rival of Balti more in the number of- inhabitants and in the amount of its wholesale business. ' And we hope the time is distant only a few years when ail the merchants or this and every other part of North Carolina will find it to their advantage to supply their stores from Wilmington houses." The revival meetings in the Metho dist Church at Wilson will continue through this week, which is the fourth since they began. Up to Sun day night Pastor Tuttle had received 32 members. Othr churches will -no doubt Bhare good work. in the fruits of the Billy Mahone is to be the Radical candidate in Virginia for Governor, it is said. There is no man in the Old Dominion, we would as soon see beaten as Billy, and we hope it will be done to the complete satisfaction of Virginia s worst enemy. A Northern Republican Senator says that when a man is to be con firmed and the issue is his attacks upon the Southern people, then 'there is only one class of Republi cans in the Senate." Shameful and infamous if true. Some ignoble thief without any remains of conscience, has been try ing to rob the Episcopal, Presby terian and Baptist Churches at War renton, Va. He only got three stoles belonging to the Episcopal rector. Xlp-Xp. Winston Daily The Wilmington Stab is twenty one and a half years old, and is a tip top paper in every, respect.
