The fourth annual commencement of Shelby Female College terminated before a crowded house with interesting exercises. Aeheboro Courier : The con struction train on the road from High Point to Asheboro, on returning from this place to the camp last Monday night, ran over three cowa just above Brown's X Roads, derailing two flat cars and killing one of the colored employes. Two other men were seriously injured and several others were shaken up but not seriously. Raleigh TtAitor : An accident occurred to the north -bound train which left the city on the Raleigh & Gaston road at 11:45 o'clock this morning. It was caused, we learn, from a misplaced Bwitch near the North Carolina Car Shops, which Ciuetd the locomotive to run into a box car. The colored fireman was slightly in jured. Asheville Citizen ; A sad acci dent befell Mr. T. W. Graham, yesterday, at the factory of W. E. Williamson & Bon. Mr. Graham was operating a Universal wood-working machine, and 'from some unaccountable cause his light band slipped from the piece of timber he was holding and fell under the rapidly revolving knives, which in an instant cut-off the thumb and the first and second fingers. Raleigh CaU: Mr. W. A. Withers, formerly assistant Chemist in the State Agricultural Department here, who has been attending Cornell University for the past year, stood a competitive examina tion in a class of thirty-two members, at the close of the term, for one of eight fel lowships. He ranked fourth in the class and secured a fellowship which carries with it the privilege of free tuition and a premium of f 400 per annumr Durham Tobacco Plant: This morning, in the western suburbs of the town, near the railroad, while 'projicken,' Andrew Doom, colored, 6hot Bob Mebane, colored, with a pistol. We failed to learn the extent of the injuries, but it is stated that Dr. A. M. Moore probed for the ball, but failed to find it. We learn that the wounded man was resting well at noon. Last night was one of, the warmest we ever experienced in Durham. The nights here are generally pleasant even in the warmest weather. Raleigh ATews- Observer: The Governor has commissioned Rev. Dr. M. M. Marshall to represent North Carolina at the Paris Exposition. Dr. Marshall ex pects to attend the Exposition. Drop ping into the Savinps Bank yesterday we found Cashier Pullen busily engaged cash ing checks for the fourth and last dividend of 5 per cent, of the State National Bank. The dividend amounts to something of $18,000. The loan exhibit closed last night after one of the most successful sea sons of anything ever seen in Raleigh. Charlotte Chronicle: The large OTder for furnishing all the pulleys, shaft ings, hampers, couplings, boxes, etc., for the Charlotte Oil and Fertilizer Co. has been awarded to the Biddell Foundry and Machine Co. of this city. The nine steam cotton presses are to be ready for delivery by August 1st Charley Dixon, a sixteen-year old boy of this city, who went to witness the game of baseball be tween the Charlotte Juniors and the Con cord nine on Friday, met with a painful accident on his return trip yesterday morning in trying to beat his way. Wilkeeboro Chronicle: We will soon have a factory. The Wilkesboro Manufacturing Company propose to have their factory in operation by the first of August. They are working on with a vim that means factory and that soon. Several of our young men are speaking of attending the encampment at Wrightavitle It would be a pleasant trip. A color ed man by the name of Henry Russell was placed in Taylorsville jil last week. He is the supposed murderer of old man Tomp kins of Alleghany counly some time since, and for the arrest of whom a reward of $300 was offered.
