A man named Weir is on trial in Charleston on charge of cutting another man's throat. The jury con sists of seven white men and five colored. A construction train the first to come into the city limits over the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley rail roadarrived at the terminus of the road on Point Peter yesterday after noon about six o'clock. It was met by a number of citiiens who went over to the Point on the steam tug if arte. The party was taken over the road a distance of some three or four miles, and enjoyed the trip im mensely. About eight miles of the track have been completed. The Board of Directors of the Wil mington & Weldon Railroad Com pany Sbnoonce a e ml -annual divi dend of four per cent, on the capital stock of the company, payable at the office of the treasurer of the com pany in this eity on and after July 15th. The following are the forecasts for to-day: For Virginia and North Carolina, light rain, decidedly cooler, winds be coming brisk and northwesterly. One of the strong point in favor . . oor seaside resorts-particularly of Carolina Beach is that they never have bad weather. The steamer Wisteria, Gov ernment buoy-tender, was in port I yesterday. She went down the river I n the afternoon The patriotio printers of the Star will have a holiday to-day and in consequence thereof no paper will be issued from this offioe to-morrow. Surviving members of Company I. Eighteenth Regiment N. C. In fantry.are requested to meet to day at the Hammocks at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. All the merchants on Water Mtreet agree leave to give of absence during the encampment to such of their employes as are members of the Light Infantry. The Fourth being a 'National holiday, the Postofflce will be closed. The general delivery will be open from W to 10 a. m. Carriers will make one early delivery only. There will be a grand display of fire-works to-night at Carolina Beach, and other attractions during the day to add to the enjoyment of visitors at this famous seaside resort. Mr. Georgo A. Karnsey, Vice President and General Manager of the Burgaw Si Onslow Railroad, was in the city yesterday. He says work will commence on that road in a few days. Capt. F. M. James reports 15 interments in Oak Grove Cemetery duriug the mouth of Juue. Of these three were aJults and "Stlgf were Mr. E. J. Pennypacker has re ceived his commission as Col lector of Customs at this port, and Mr. C H. Robinson will transfer the office to him on Saturday next. On Monday the new Collector will for mally enter upon the discharge of the duties of his position. Altraclloas at aba llai locks To- lay. At the Hammocks and Ocean View, ou Wrightsville Beach, the attrac tious will be numerous and of a char acter to inspire the patriotism of young and old for the day we cele brate. There will be bands of niuiic both brass and stringed Instruments at the Hammocks and Ocean View Pavilion, to dispense inspiring mu sic to those who wish to dance. The merry-go-rounds, the switchback, shooting galleries, Jc will be attrac tlxe features. The fireworks at the Hammocks will be the most elabor ate, and the finest display ever seen on the beach. The pyrotechnic dis play will commence at 8 o'clock p. in., and close about 10 o'clock p. m. Playor'a Court. Win. Herring, the negro boy who attempted to rob the money drawer in Mr. Rhodes' bar-room Tuesday night, was committed to jail for trial at the Criminal Court. Mary W. Swann, colored, disorder ly conduct, fined twenty dollars. Edward Swann, colored, disorderly conduct, judgment suspended. Obadiah Jenkins, disorderly con duct. Case discharged that another and previous case of the same nature might be tried against him. One case of drunk and down was settled by the payment of a fine of ten dollars and costs. A Ly netting Affair. A correspondent of the Star writes from Minnie, Irwin county, Ga., June 25th as follows: A negro named Elevi Washington, from Klngstree, S. C, was lynched here to-day for committing rape upon a young white married woman, at Minnie, Ga. He had his trial, and the officer and a heavy guard started with him to Irwinville jail. Tbey were met about two miles from Min nie by a hundred masked men armed with guns, who made the guard hold up their hands, took the negro, and dragged him about fifty yards by the neck, and hung him up in a black gum tree. He died of strangulation. A paper taoked to his back read, "lie ware I Our women most be pro tected. (Signea)Jack The Ripper." The negro owned his guilt at the trial. (() Hacloa Rallatta. The rainfall in this district yester day was a follows: Wilmington .20, Lomberton .73. Florence .17, Cheraw .07, Wadesboro .10, Charlotte .17, Raleigh .85, Goldsboro .20, Newbern .23, Weldon .50. Rain was general throughout the cotton belt. The max imum temperature ranged from 84 to 93 degrees and the minimum from 63 to 72. RNING State Guar 01 tfee Encamp- General Orders No. 7, dated Ral eigh, Jane 24, in reference to the Encampment at Wrightsville, says: 1. Encampments of the North Car olina State Guard being held by authority or law, every officer and enlisted man is required to be present for duty. The Krlgadier General will report to this office any commission ed officers absent, with all facts re garding the cause of absence. He will also forward to these headquar ters, in the field, daily during the en campment, a "Consolidated Daily lie port"1 of the troops, and at the close of the encampment will forward to this office the "Regimental Con- I solidated Morning Reports." 2. The Commander-in-Chief confl- I Hnt, nnon -n thA nfflnora orirI I men of the Brigade to give prompt and careful attention to every duty. He intends to be present sever- al days during the encampment. but desires that his presence there shall interfere as little as practicable with the regular routine of military duties. Tuesday, July 16th, is hereby set apart and shall be known as "Gov-Trior's Day,"-and on the morning of that day the camp will be formally inspected by the Commander-in-Chief ana in the afternoon, he will review the brigade. Friday, July 12tb, shall be known as "Veteran's Day," and such ceremonies will be observed as shall be prescribed hereafter. 3. The Brigadier General command ing will make requisition upon the Quartermaster General for all neces sary camp equipage and supplies, or if he so desires be can direct the Quartermaster General to issue direct to the respective regimental com manders upon their requisition. As a part of the tents used are drawn from the United States government and are the property of the Uni ted States, commanding officers of companies will be held responsible for any damage done by marking or in any way defacing them. The Brig adier General will cause a special in spection to be made of the tents on the last day of the encampment be fore turning them over to the Quar termaster General, and the attention of commanding officers will be called to any damage done 4 All enlisted men who have served faithfully in the North Carolina State Guard for the period of three years will be allowed to wear upon their uniform dress coats the "Service Chevrons" U. S. Regulation. This consists of a diagonal half chevron of gold lace onehalf an i nch wide, stitched npon a piece of dark blue cloth of the color of the uniform, and is worn upon both sleeves below the elbow, extending from seam to seam, the front end nearest the cuff and one-half an inch above the point of the f.iirr wa InOnalrlal inannfaetarlDK Company A meeting was held last night for the purpose of organizing a company under the above name, to manufac ture wooden ware of various kinds, such as fruit and egg crates, buckets, grocers'plates and dishes, veneers and excelsior, and also canning fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. The meeting was organized by calling Mr. John D. Bellamy, Jr., to the chair and ap pointing Mr. B. F. King secretary. The oapital stock of the company is $15,000, which may be increased to 25,000, and the par value of shares is $25, payable in weekly installments of twenty-five cents. Two hundred and fifty of the six hundred shares were subscribed for by those present at the meeting, and that the remain der of the stock will be readily taken goes without saying. The meeting adjourned until Fri day night next at 8.30 o'clock, at the Mayor's office in the City Hall, at which time the officers of the com pany will be elected. DeRosset, was held last even ing at the Mayor's . office, and it was decided to visit the Encampment of the State Guard at Wrightsville on I the day selected by theGovernor, to-wit; Friday, July 12th, 1889, The Quartermaster General has provided transportation from all parts of the State for veterans visit ing the Encampment, at one cent per mile each way. The veterans will be formed in line at 2.30 p. m. in front of The Orton, where the companies will be organ ized and assigned to the officers, and marched to the Front street depot, whence a special train will convey them to the Encampment. Badges can be procured at The Orton at a nominal cost.
