Rarclar'a .Narrow Bscape Police offloer Bryant had a burglar cornered in the Qem saloon yesterday morning, but the fellow got away and made good his escape. The plaoe has been entered several times recently and the money drawer robbed of its contents, and Wedneeday night offi cer Bryant waa placed on watch in the buildingto capture the thief if he should put in an appearance. About half past 1 o'clock the fellow came in at the back of the house, through a hole that he had made in the rear wall by removing some of the bricks. He passed behin d the bar and the offloer tnraei his bulls eye lantern on him. covered him with his pistol and ordered him to throw up his handa. The burglar had passed around the bar counter ana was standing in a corner of the room. He put up his hands and begged the policeman not to shoot. The latter advanced towards the thief from behind the bar, but before reaching him stnin bled down the steps at the end of the counter and fell flat on the floor. The opportunity thus afforded for an escape was taken advantage of at once by the burglar, who ran out of the bar and into the dining room, darted up a convenient stairway and escaped from the building through a window to the roof of a shed, from which he easily descended to the ground. The policeman sent a ball from his pistol after the fleet, footed rogue, but it missed him, lodging in the door to the dining room The thief turned out to be a colored man named Noah Smith, the cook employed in the restaurant. He came down to the saloon yesterday morn ing as usual, but getting an inkling that he would be arrested put out, and is supposed to have left town. Piaa Viare Cat tew Bacaiai. The Acme mills at Cronly are turn -ing out large quantities of the bag' ging and are putting in additional machinery wbieh will enable them to greatly increase their output in a short time.
