A telegram from the Chief Signal officer nt Washington, D. C, received nt the Signal office here at 10:50 a. m. yesterday ordered the northwest sig nal to be di splay ed for a severe storm, and reported violent northeast gales off the coast. Signals were also ordered up at Morehead City. The day passed without further in dications of a disturbance in this sec tion, however, and the night was beautifully clear and still, with no sign of storm on land or sea. As announced in the Stab's dis patches of yesterday the cyclone struck in towards the New Jersey coast, and the Signal Service reported It as central off the Middle Atlantic ooast yesterday. High winds were reported from most of the coast sta tions north of here, and a special re port from Cape Henry said the wind was blowing sixty miles an hoar from the northwest at that station at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. It was for this reason, and to warn vessels leaving this port that they might run into violent gales off, the ooast, that the northwest storm signal was or dered displayed here. At 5:30 p. m. a telegram '. was sent from Washington, D. C, to the obser ver at Boutbport, saying that vessels could safely go South lrom this port.
