Larkina, colored, charged with larceny, in stealing a small sum of money, tbe property of Mr. W. K. Worth, was committed for trial at the Criminal Court. Ben Cooper, a countryman, found drunk and down, was fined $20 and costs, but the fine was afterwards remitted on eondition that defendant remove from this Jurisdietion and remain out of the city twelve months. Cooper is a cattle dealer, and occasionally comes to town on business, always managing, however, to get into the elutches of the police before he can get out of the city. He said that he saw by the papers that Mayor Fowler was oat of town and he thought he would take advantage of bis absence to have a "little tarn with the boys, " not thinking that his hooor would get the turn upon him be tore he got through with his little racket. Gore, president, in the chair, and I sorrow carried it into the building and laid it upon the floor. A report soon .spread on the streets that an unknown colored man had fallen out of a window at the engine house and broken his neck. A large crowd quickly gathe: ed, but everybody was denied admission to the hall, on the plea that the coroner must first view thej body. One of the boys thrust a ten dollar Confederate bill into the hand of a darkey stand ing near the door and told him to go to a drug store and get a bottle of arnica. The man started off in a run on his errand of mercy, and per haps he is still running, for nothing has been seen of him since. Ia the meantime the news had travelled down town and newspaper reporters with pockets full of note-books were on hand, eager to get the particulars, and in a few minutes the Chief of the Fire Department ar rived in hot haste, with the Assistant Chief, and a crowd of followers. The Chief was invited in to look at the "remains" lying covered with a sheet on the floor, but he had seen enough and refusing to look at the ghastly object started off to hurry up the coroner. But in the meantime the joke leaked ou', and the crowd learn ing that it had been badly sold rapidly dwindled away. Criminal Court. The Criminal Court for New Hano veer county will meet to-morrow and continue one week, the Superior Court convening on Monday, the 23d inst. There are a good many cases, but none of much importance for trial. A continuance to the next term will be asked for and in all probability grant ed for the trial of Bryan Carroll, charged with poisoning his wife. Ire dell Meares and Sol. C.Weill, Esqs., are Carroll's counsel, having been as signed by the Court to defend him. Dcatn or . H . ITlcFarland. Mr. Win. H. McFarland, for twenty years a trusted employe of the Wil mington & Weldon Railroad Com pany, and son of the late Jonah Mc Farland, died yesterday in this city, after a lingering illness. He was thirty-eight years of age; an honest, up right, energetic man, loyal to his friends and devoted to his family. He married a daughter of Col. Jas. G. Burr, and leaves a widow and two sons, besides his mother and a sister to mourn their loss. Chamber of Industry. A meeting of the Chamber of Indus try will be held to-morrow evening at the Lity Hall. On motion of Mr. Jas C. Steven son, a committee was appointed to draft resolutions, which after amend ment were adopted. The resolutions reoite that Within the past three months.on three occasions.the steam ship oompany had advertised steam -era to sail on certain days from New York, and solicited freight there for, and then, without previous notice had changed the day of sail ing, and that from time to time bills of lading had been signed for goods that were left on tbe dock at New York. The resolutions, further, ex press disapproval of the treatment received, and it was resolved to pre sent these grievances to the manage ment of the steamship company with the expression of the hope that assur ance will be given that interests which are so identical will in future be jeal ously guarded. The secretary was in structed to send a copy of the resolu tions as adopted to the agent of the steamship company, and the meeting adjourned. Optra Hoa... Miss Agnes Herndon and her ex cellent company will open the Opera House, Tuesday evening, September 17th, in "La Belle Marie," a new and very popular play. So exceptional a critic as the New York Time-, thus mentions the star, company and play: Miss Agnes Berndon, a handsome womau and an actress of great popu larity, appeared at the Windsor Theatre last night in a piece, classed on the bill as a "comedy-drama," called "La Belle Marie, or a Woman's Revenge.' There was a very large attendance and no lack of applause, so the season at the Windsor Theatre may be said to have opened auspi oiously. Miss Herndon wore a num ber of handsome dresses, and her acting was marked by a degree of emphasis whioh seemed to exactly touch the appreciation of the audi ence. "La Belle Marie'' involves a trite and, at the same time probable story, and its scene changes from Fall Kiver, Mass , to Jiew xork and its vicinity. The interior of a tramps' Lodging House is one of the stage pictures, and much hilarity was caused by the exhibition, therein presented, of an inmate's encounter with a oake of soap. The humor of tbe play is persuasive and emphatic. The reserved sale of seats will com mence to morrow morning at Yates' book store. Admission as usual. CiUx.b' BDlldmi ana Loam A .aorta Hon. The net earnings since the first series was issued amount to $2.39 per share, or nine and a half per cent, per annum on the amount paid in.
