Ooctasi Crop Flgarn.
The annual statement of the Amer
ican cotton crop of 1888-'89, by Alfred
B. Shepperson, statistician of the
New York Cotton Exchange, has
been received. Mr. Shepperson
makes the total crop 6,939,284 bales.
The figures of the Financial Chroni
cle make it 6,935,082 bales, 4,202 bales
less than Mr. Shepperson's estimate.
Mr. Shepperson says that errors have
been corrected in the overland move
ment, and also at several of the ports,
and that the figures of the entire
statement may be taken as authentic.
The crop averaged 497.06 pounds
per bale, against 488.05 pounds per
bale the previous season, and the
excess in weight makes the crop
equal to 7,067,271 bales of the same
weight of the previous crop, and
thus the largest crop ever produced.
But the extra weight, it is said,
was caused by damp weather during
harvesting time, and the high
price of bagging, so that.it would not
be fair to claim the crop the largest,
all things being equal, particularly as
the best authorities agree that the
spinning oapacity of the crop was no
larger, if indeed it was as large, as the
crop of 1887- 88, owing to the poorer
character of a large portion of the
cotton. It is a singular fact, however,
that with this anomalous condition it
brought more money.
By far the most notable features of
the crop was the movement of it. The
exports foreign were the largest on
record, while the consumption by do
mestic mills was within 1,008 bales of
the largest ever known. As the New
York Journil of Commerce puts it,
tbere is always interest to know what
portion of the crop is consumed in
this country, and the Journal goes on
to say that there has been a falling
off in the consumption at the North,
but this is made up by the increase at
the South, so that the total amount
oi cotton used in this country is
about the same as for the previous
year.

When Dion Boucicault wrote and
first produced the "Streets of New
York" thirty years ago, it was voted
to be the best drama ever written de
picting life as it really is in the great
metropolis, with its pathetic and hu
morous incidents and thrilling situa
tions. That the play still maintains
a firm bold with the public isevinced
by its long and continued career of
prosperity, and it is to-day as strong
drawing in attraction as any of its
class on the stsge. It will be present
ed here to-night and to-morrow
night by a specially selected company
of capable people, with W. C. Donald
son as Tom Badger. The scenery used
in the production this season is en
tirely new and on a gorgeous seal,
while the entire performance is
claimed to be In every way superior
to any presentation of this familiar
play even. Reserved seats are now on

The predictions of the Signal Ser
vice observers as to the progress and
intensity of the Btorm that passed
along the Atlantic seaboard Mon
day night were fully verified.
Rain fell iu torrents all night
long, and although the wind
velocity in this city was not
great the maximum reported being
only twenty-five miles an hour the
storm along the coast was terrific.
Residents at Ocean View eay that the
wind came from the southwest late in
the night with tremendous force and
that the velocity could not have been
less than fifty miles an hour. The sea
ran high and was white with foam as
far as the eye could reach. The wind
moderated iu the morning, however,
but a very heavy rain followed. So
far as known the storm caused no
damage along the beach.
The rainfall in the city amounted
to 2 15 inches.
At 3.1S p. m. the cautionary south
west signals were displayed at the
Wilmington station, aud remained
up last night, although the signals at
Charleston, S. C, were ordered down,
and at midnight there were no indi
cations of anything but fair and
pleasant weather, although the tem
perature was a little above the
normal.
A special bulletin, received at 12
o'clock last night from the Weather
Bureau iu Washington, D. C , said
that the storm had moved northeast'
ward, with decreasing energy, and
was then central on the Virginia
coast. It will probably cause north
east winds and rain from Virginia
northeast to Massachusetts on Wednesday.
