Mr. Pearson, the evangelist, arrived here yesterdoy morning by train on the Carolina Central en route to Tarboro, but missed connec tion and was forced to remain oves. Upon bis arrival here he was met by many of his friends and escorted to the residence of Dr. Thos. F. Wood, where he spent the day and night. Upon urgent invitation he preach ed last night, and the deep interest taken by onr people in Mr. Pearson was manifested by the ardor shown in their desire to hear him. An hour or more before the beginning of the service the major portion of the First Baptist -Church where it was held was well nigh filled, and it was not long before the large room was ft rained to its utmost oapaoityby the great number endeavoring to obtain seals. Mr. Pearson opened his remarks by saying that his stay in Wilmington was unintentional, but he trusted providential; and in consequence he ohose as his subject, "Divine Provi denoe." His text was the 27th verse of the 21st chapter of Ezekiel: "I will overturn, overturn, overturn it; and it shall be no more, until He comes, whose right it is; and I will irive it Him." He divided his dis course into phases bearing upon the characteristics of Divine Providence, as follows: The importance, credi bility, minuteness, material and mystery; and from these points his sermon was argumentative, search ing, and impressive. It was a power ful sermon, and sufficed to prove why Mr. Pearson has such a strong hold upon the hearts of our people. At the conclusion of his discourse, he announoed the course that he is to pursue in his evangelistio labors for some time in the future, and stated that it was his intention to visit the Holy Land next spring provided it is the Divine will that he be allowed to do so. His farewell remarks were very touching. A great many of those present wailed in the body of the church to speak to hiin, and all in all he has met with a very cordial recep tion. He leaves at 9 o'clook this morning for Tarboro, wheae he has an ap pointment to hold a series of meet ings. Ptnllr Kcaolau A family rauoion was recently held near Bladenboro, N. Editor Star: The frequency with whioh the city has to provide new horses, &c, for its Fire Department, and tbe great expense attached thereto is attracting the attention of the tax payers of the city, and be lieving that the proper authorities will cheerfully listen to any sugges tions whioh might be respectfully made, I would like to suggest tbat instead of all tbe Fire Department rushing their horses and men to. fires throngn tbe deep sand, as at present, wbioh frequently turns out to be burning chimneys, false alarms, or fires eztinquished before the city alarm .is given, that the alarms be divided amongst the different or ganizations, especially the steam engines, and that when the city bell strikes, the company having charge of that particular alarm box should proceed to tbe fire while the others should remain at their houses ready for a general alarm, which oould be turned in, should the fire get beyond control of the first engine or be larger than it oould manage. The tins payers on the hills would also request and suggest that the streets on the hill should be improva ed and nlaoed in better condition. that the tire companies in going to fires may go with greater rapidity, so that houses may not burn down be fore the engines arrive; that provi sion should be made for a plentiful supply of water, and that the policy adopted by tbe oity government for all these years, of making all street improvements. down town and neg lecting the hills or -up town, be ohanged, and tax-payers on the su burbs be given some benefit for the large amount paid by them as oity taxes. Yours, Zip. While cheerfully giving place to the above communication, we do not think the first suggestion practicable, except for larger oities than Wilming ton. Editor . OCTOBER 12, 1889. Cspe Fear 4t Yadkin Valley. President Julian M. Gray, of the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley railroad, and Mr. John M . Rose, secretary of the company, accompanied by Mr. G. W. Williams and Mr. W. M. Cam ming, yesterday made a trip over the completed portion of the road. They found everything in good shape, and the party returned in the afternoon. President Gray and Mr. Rose left for Fayetteville via the Carolina Central at 7:30 p. m. Two section houses have been built at points between the terminus here and Black river, and contracts for all the depot buildings between Fayetteville and Wilming ton have been made. The convicts from Fayetteville who are to assist in the work of laying the rails beyond Black river, arrived here yesterday about 10 a. m. on the steamer Murchison, and left at three o ciock in tne atternoon on a con struction train, for the place where they will commence work. a.vnr F-rfctii s. WTNSLOW8 SOOTHING 8YRTJP. Rsv Stlvanus Cobb thus writes in the Boston Chris tian Freeman .- We would by no means recom mend any kind of medicine wnicn we did not know to be good particularly to infanta. But of Mrs. Wtnslow's Soothing Syrup we can speak from knowledge: in our own family it has proved a blessing indeed, by giving an Infant troubled with colic pains, quiet sleep, and the parents un broken rest at night. Most parents can appre ciate these blessings. Here is an article which works to perfection, and which is harmless; for the sleep which it affords the infant is perfectly natural, and the little cherub awakes as "bright as a button. And during the process of teeth ing its value is Incalculable. We have frequent ly heard mothers say that they would not be without it from the birth of the child till it had finished with the teething siege, on any conside ration whatever.
