Wilmington continues to keep
ahead of tbe other Southern ports in
the prioes paid for cotton. Yester
day, sales were made here on a basis
of 10 816 cents for middling, while
the Charleston market was quoted
dull and nominal at 10 cents. Savan
nah, quiet at 9 1116 cents; Mobile, 9
oents; New Orleans, 10 cents, and Gal
veston, 9 15-16 cents. Besides paying
better prioes, Wilmington's facilities
for handling cotton are unsurpassed,
with compresses, railroad depots and
warehouses all at the water's edge,
where ships take the bales direot
from the presses, and cargoes are
loaded with greater dispatch and
with more satisfaction to ship
masters than at other ports.
With a realization of all these facts
the daily receipts of tbe staple at
this port must continue to grow,
bringing increased aotivity in other
branches of trade, extending our
commerce, and adding to the general
prosperity of the city.

A Wilmington Lsdf'i Invention.
Mrs. P. L. Bridgers has received let.
ters patent for an admirable inven
tion something that has long been
needed, and that will please house
wives all over the land. It is a grate
cornioe designed to protect mantels
from burning or being injured by
fires kindled in grates; both the top
and sides. It can be made of polished
brass or nickel, and is adjustable, so
as to fit any grate, and is both orna
mental and useful. Messrs. Alderman,
Fi (inner A Co. have made a model of
the invention, which will be on exhi
bition at the State Fair in Raleigh
this week They say that they have
heard manufacturers of grates and
mantels speak in the highest terms of
the invention.

Rev. Mr. Arnold, who went North

says that he is well satisfied with the
degree of success attained in getting
tbe car introduced to the public.
The prospects are most favorable for
organization with a large company al
ready holding several valuable con
tracts with Northern railroads. On
every hand the invention was praised
and pronounced the thing at present
demanded by the public Mr. Iredell
Meares will remain in New York for
some days in the interest of the in

Quite a large number of ladies were
in attendance yesterday at the open

Prices ran high and farmers were
highly pleased. At the close of the
sale a novel affair took place. One of
the most fascinating and charming
young ladies was offered by the pro
