There were many inquiries yester
day at tbe office of the Clyde Steam
ship Company in this city, for infor
mation concerning the steamer Pio
neer. ashore off Ocracoke Inlet; but
tbe agent of tbe company was with
out intelligence. All tbat la known
is that the steamer went ashore Mon
day night and that the passengers
and crew were saved. A Baltimore
telegram of tbe 15th says tbe vessel
and cargo are probably a total loss.
The Norfolk papers report that on
Tuesday wrecking toga went to the
assistance of the stranded veaael, but
on tbat day there was a terrific blow
along the coast and the government
telegraph linea to Hatteraa were blown
down. A telegram from Beaufort, N.
0 on Wednealay reported a pale
from the northwest, and that pilots
were unable to go out owing to a
heavy ground swell.
A dispatch from Norfolk dated the
loth aaya : A howling northwest gale
awept over tbia section laat night, and
to-day tbe government telegraph
line haa blown down between Capes
Henry and Hatteraa, which accounts
for no information being reoeived to
day from the steamer Pioneer, of the
Clyde line, ashore at Ocracoke Inlet,

wrecking tug of the Merritt company
have gone to her assistance.

Tbe Polioe Committee of the Board
of Aldermen met Wednesday night
to consider charges against police
officer J. B. Brinkley, tbat he had
uaed unnecessary severity in arresting
Mr. Thomas Conner on Sunday af
ternoon last. The committee found
tbat the officer waa legally justified
in using his club, but that lack of
judgment was shown in not putting
the nippers on the prisoner' wrist,
when he oould have been easily con
trolled and the use of tbe olub would
not have been necessary.

A telegram from Beaufort, N. C,
October 16th says: Two large three
masted schooners are Jying off and
on outside, apparently in distress
Under Cape Lookout a large steam
ship is visible, also showing signs of
distress. A brisk gale has been blow
ing from the northwest ever since
Monday. Pilots cannot get out ow
ing to a heavy ground swell, two at
tempts to do so having failed.
