The Merchants Carnival at the
Opera House last night was one of the
most enioyaDiej ou wiuuvum erer
given in the city of Wilmington. The
attendance was probably as large and
select a gathering as the Opera House
ever held.
The entertainment opened with a
"Carnival March," in which forty
young ladies participated, singing a
chorus, '-The Boom of Wilmington."
Tbe ladies were in costume with sem
blances of the trades they represent
ed, very tasty in design and arrange
merit.
Nearly all of the business houses in
the oity and all branches of trade
were represented by the following
ladies: Miss Kate Bremer. Mrs. K.
Vollers, Misses M. Range, A. Stolter,
J. Smith, A. Stem merman, M. Baker,
C, Levy, .Fanny Knoblocb, M'

During the intermissions Germania
Band rendered some choice selec
tions, assisted by Prof. Greenewald
at the piano A solo was sung by
Miss Minnie Schwartz, and a duet by
Miss Fannie Knobloch and Miss
Sohwartz. The entertainment con
cluded with an animated and amus
ing dialogue between Miss Annie Ul
rich, representing the Carolina Cen
tral, and Miss Fannie Knoblocb, the
Atlantic Coast Line.
The entertainment reflects much
credit upon the ladies of St. Paul's
Lutheran church, under whose excel-

afforded a delightful evening's en

netted a handsome sum for the bene

Mr. Thomas E. James has been ap
pointed Local Freight and Passenger
Agent of the Cape Fear & Yadkin
Valley Road, at Wilmington, and the
selection is an admirable one in every
particular. Mr. James has been in
the ra I road business for the last
twelve or thirteen years, and is thor
oughly familiar with the freight and
passenger department of railroads.
He first started as a frtight conductor
on the Atlantic coast ijine, ana
on account of his attention
to duties was promoted to passengers
conductor, an 1 having served in this
capacity lor some time, he was made
Trace and Claim Agent on the tame
line. He left here about four years
since to take the position of Joint
Agent of the Associated Railways at
Charlotte, which position he has held
until his recent appointment here.
Mr. James it a native Wilming-
tonian, and it will be a source
of gratification to h s many friends
to know of his return to his
old home. The appointment is an
excellent one and he will be a most
valuable man to the road, both on ac
count of his personal popularity and
his general fitness for the position.

WHO IS MRS. W1MSLOW f As this Question
s freouentlv asked, we will simply say that she is
a lady who for upwards of thirty years has unti
ringly devoted her time and talents as a female
Physician and nurse, principally among children.
She has especially studied the constitution and
wants of this numerous class, and, as a result of
this effort, and practical knowledge, obtained in
a lifetime spent as a nurse ana pnysician, sue nas
compounded a Soothing Syrup for children teeth
ing. It operates like magic giving rest and
health, and is, moreover, sure to regulate the
bowels. In consequence of this article Mrs. Wins
low is becoming world-renowned as a benefactor
of her race; children certainly do bisk op and
bless her; especially is this the case in this city.
Vast Quantities of the Soothing Syrup are daily
sold and used here. We think Mrs. Winslow has
Immortalized her name by this invaluable artl
cle, and we sincerely believe thousands of chil
dren have been savea from an early grave ny its
timely use, and that millions yet unborn will
share its benefits, and unite '
