The dedication of the new Castle Hall of Stonewall and Claren don Lodges, Knights of Pythias, will not take place Thursday night, a previously announced, as arrange ments for the ceremony cannot be completed in time. A Floreooe (S. C ) correspon dent say the contract for construct ing the macadamized road from Flo rence to the National Cemetery has been awarded to Mr. Thomas E. It was largely attended, and much enthusiasm prevailed. The object of the meeting was to raise money to build a lecture room and bny a new orgaa for tbs church. The lecture room will eoet five thousand dollars, and the organ three thousand. Two thousand dollars hsd already been raised, aad last night five thousand dollars additional was sub scribed, making' In all seven thou sand dollars. . There only remains one thousand to be raised, which will undoubtedly be done very soon. The organ will be ordered immedi ately and will be a beautiful one. It is proposed to place it in the rear of the pulpit. The Lecture Room will be built in the rear of the Churoh, fronting on Fifth street, and will be commenced at a very early day. CITY FA 1 HERS. of alar atouac of te f AMersaea. The Board of Aldermen met last night in regular session. All the members were present with the ex ception of Aldermen Pearsall and Morton. Alderman Hloks, from the Commit tee on Finance, to whom was report ed the application of Mr. W. L. De Rosset, Jr., for a subscription in aid of an industrial publication, reported adversely. The report was concurred In. Alder man Poet, from the Commit tee on Lights, reported additional lights put up, making the total 52 gaslights, 104 oil lamps- and 51 elec tric lights. Alderman Craft, from the Public Buildings Committee, reported pro gross in the matter of repairs to the City Hall. Alderman Hloks, from the Public Buildings' Committee, reported a con ference with the Committee on Fire Department in regard to furnishing coal for both departments, and that the contract had been awarded to Borsch Brothers, at 86 per ton, they being the lowest bidderssnbject to the approval of the ohlef of the department. - Aldermen Post, of the Fire Com mittee, reported that the committee had been authorised by the Board of Audit and Finance to purobase horses and a hook and ladder truck to supply the necessities of the de partment. Reports of the chief of fire depart ment and oity physician were read and ordered filed. The Mayor stated that Foreman Geisohen of the Howard Relief F. . Co. ; was present and desired to be heard in regard to the condition of the horses of the company. Mr. Geisohen said the horses were unfit for service and asked the Board to supply the company with a new pair. Alderman Hioks moved that the black horse used by the Wilmington Hook and Ladder Company be turn ed over to the Cape Fear F. . Co. Adopted. Alderman Hicks moved that the Chief of the Fire Department make report relative to the horses used by the Howard Relief Company, and make recommendation. Adopted. Petition of Dread -not Fire Com pany No. 5 for a horse was on motion granted, and the sum of $200 was ap propriated for a horse, harness, stalls, etc. Alderman Post of the special com. in it tee, reported progress in the mat ter of codifying the laws and ordi nances. Petition of W. H. Bell for permis sion to continue to tin hisstables on lot adjoining Front street market, was discussed and referred to the Market Committee. Alderman Post, of the Sanitary Committee, read a communication addressed to the Board of Audit and Finance, asking an appropriation for an additional health officer. The Board concurred in Alderman Post's recommendation for an appropria tion for this purpose. Aldeman Hloks, of the Special Committee, reported that Capt. Divine, Supt. of the W. & W. R. R , had kept Nutt street open and greatly facilitated traffic at the cross ing. Alderman Smith called attention to the bad condition of the streets in the vicinity of the street railway, and asked attention of the Committee on Streets to the matter. Alderman Smith called attention to the difficulty experienced by fire en gines in reaching Are hydrants on account of the bad oondition of some of the streets, and asked that sawdust be laid on streets where needed. Alderman Craft moved that streets on which hydrants were situated be laid with sawdust or ballast. Adopt ed. Frank MoCoy was granted permis sion to beat a drum in City Hall for one hour next Monday, but not later than 11 o'clock. Alderman Hioks wanted no more nails driven in the walls of the Hall, for any purpose. Aldermen Post and Hioks spoke feelingly of the illness of Alderman Pearsall, and on motion of Alder man Hioks, Alderman Post was ap pointed a committee of one to ex press the sympathy of the Board. Alderman Post stated that the Su perintendent of Health had called the attention of the Board to sinks and cess-pools in the sity, and moved that the matter be referred to the Committee on Ordinances, to prepare an ord inance for the abolition of such nuisances. The motion was adopted. Alderman Smith called attention the Committee on Streets and Wharves to the bad oondition of Campbell street. Alderman Post moved that $1,000 be appropriated for the employment of an expert civil engineer to estab nh a uniform grade of. streets and to prepare plans aad specifications for a system of fewerage. Adopted. The Mayor offered the following Star resolution which was Alderman Craft and presented by unanimously adopted, viz: Whssxas, On the 20th, 21st and 22nd instant, the hundredth anni versary of the adoption by North Carolina of the Constitution of the United States will be appropriately celebrated in the town of Fayette -ville; and Whereas, The citizens 01 Wilming ton are in full and perfect accord with the citizens of our sister town of Fay etteville in their efforts to make their centennial celebration the grandest occasion ever known in onr State; Be it Resolved, by the Board of AU dermen. That said centennial cele bration commends itself to the pa triotism of every true North Caro linian. - Resolved, That we recommend to the citizens of this city a general sus pension of business dnring said days (particularly the 21st instant), that all those desiring to attend the celebra tion may have an opportunity to do so. Resolved, That a copy of these reso lotions be delivered to the Chamber of Commerce and Produce Exchange, with a request for concurrent action. Bagg presiding, The County Treasurer's report was submitted, showing balance on hand to the credit of the General Fund amounting to $6,151.25; balance to credit of School Fund, $8,283.84. To tal, $14,435.09, for which Treasurer Hewlett exhibited a certificate of de posit in the First National Bank. The Register of Deeds reported $20.90 received for marriage licenses issued during the month and exhibit ed the Treasurer's recipt for the same. It was ordered that the valuation of B. J. Jacob's property block 181, part of lot No. 6 be reduced from $1,000 to $600; also, property of Mrs. L. P. Leguin block 104, part of lot No. 1 be reduced from $600 to $350. Ordered, That A. D. Malloy be al lowed to peddle without payment of lioense. Ordered, That Jacob P.Wells be exempted from payment of poll tax on aocount of physical disability. In the matter of application of a number of stevedores, claiming to be non-residents of the State of North Carolina, and whose poll tax had been collected by the Sheriff, it was ordered that the amount of said tax collected from Thomas Simmons, Richard Lewis, An drew Mason, Joe McGibbeney, Dan Hopkins, Levi Carson, Chas. Bray and J as. Rountree, be returned to them, upon their filing a written affidavit sworn to before a Justice of the Peace that they are non-residents, and not liable for tax in this State ior 1889. The cold wave in the Mississippi valley reduced the temperature in the Mobile and Vicksburg districts to a mean of 38 degrees, and for New Orleans to 88.
