The Fire Department of Wilming ton compares favorably with that of other cities in the South, in appara tus used, in efficiency, and in cost to tax-payers. Itoonsist of three steam Are engines, four one-horse reels and one --01 pulled by hand, two hook I - m and ladder trucks (one an "aerial truck") pulled by horses, and one truok pulled by hand. There are thirteen horses in use by the Depart ment, and about 8,500 feet of hose. It ia altogether a volunteer Department, numbering about 250 men. The Game, well Fire Alarm system is used, and there are nineteen boxes, situated in different parts of the city, two fire alarm bells, and all engine houses and one hook and ladder truck house, and the residences of the Chief and the AssistantChief of the Department, are furnished with alarm-gongs and indicators. The expense of the De partment is about $11,000 per annum, and it Is claimed that the city has a population of 28,000. The city has 57 hydrants and 80 miles of mains. Expense, 20, 000 per annum, exclusive of interest on bonds. MontRomery, Ala., has water works of 8.000.000 eallons daily. They have but three steam fire engines, and two chemical hand extinguishers are used. There are four hose carriages, 5,500 feet of hose, and a hook and ladder truok. The department has sixteen horses. The population of Montgom ery is estimated at 34,000 There are ten alarm boxes, and the expenses of the department are $12,000 per an num. Jacksonville, Fla., owns its water works with a capacity of 4,400,000 gal lons dally. It has 117 hydrants, nine miles of mains, a varying pressure of from 45 to 110 pounds. There is a tel graph alarm system. There are twen ty paid men in the department, with six horses, one hook and ladder truok, three hose carts and 3,500 feet of hose. Annual expenses $10,600, exclusive of interest on bonds. Auausta gets her water supply from the river, pumping into a stand-pipe of 5,000,000 gallons capacity. There are 248 hydrants and 80 miles of mains, with a pressure of from 85 to 60 pounds. There are 41 fire alarm boxes.
