Ao ordered by your Board at your last regular meeting, that I should examine the 4Adrianv engine horses; complaint having been made to your honorable Board by the foreman of tbe above company that the horses were unfit for Bervioe, and that they baulked and would not pull the en gine ont of tne engine nouse to nres, T reepeotfully report that Messrs. W. P. Oldham and Daniel Quinlivan, who are expert horsemen, in company with myself, went to tbe "Adrian' engine house and found that tbe horses alluded to bad been improperly bandied b their driver. I had the driver take a pair of doable snaffle wire bits out of tbeir months and replaced them with straight bits as tbe snaffle bits were too severe. The driver then got in bis seat on tne engine and tne alarm was turned in. Tbe horses ran to tbeir plaoes in front of the engine. When the doors were opened the dri ver tightened the reins and attempted to saw tbe horses' months, whicu would make any animal aotoontrary. I ordered him to hold his reins steady, and touch his team with his whip, whiob he did, and the horses immedi ately plunged out of the engine house, pulling tbe engine with them. After the horses and engine had been driven around tbe oorner and back, 1 bad the engine and horses pot baok in(tbe house and placed another driver on the seat, and bad the doors olosed. wnen tue alarm was again sounded, and the horses ran uuder tbe harness in good shape; the driver pulled open tbe doors and the horses witb the engine immediately rushed oat of tbe house, without any trouble whatever. I, therefore, re spectfully report that the horses do poll tbe engine ont of tbe engine boose, and are as well trained and as prompt movers ao any in the Depart ment. The foreman of tbe Company, Mr. H H. Giescben, was present at the trial. Very respectfully, M AHTI.V SSWMAN, Chief W. F. Dept. On motion of Dr Mann a night ses sion of Conference was ordered.
