The Ways and Means committee yes terday heard an argument from a Pittsburg glass manufacturer, in favor of a reduction of the duty on the imported article; there was a running colloquy between members of the committee and the glass man ufacturer, which brought out some astounding facts in connection with the subject. - At Franklin, Tenn., yesterday, six or eight boys were kill ed by an embankmenl caving in on them while they were at play." The Czar is afraid some frisky Nihilist might get at one ecd, "hello" him and blow him up. Aiiohael Boland, of St. Louie, is sc far from believing that marriage is a failare that h8 ran away from a wife and twelve children to get 'married as3in to a sixteen year old girl. Senator Dolph, of OregcD, is com ing to the front aa a surplus buster. He has already bills b -S ore the Sen ate calimg for the expenditure of $142,000,000, and hasn't made a fair start yet. North Dakota is m a bad fix. As a Territory she was not happy, and now as a State she is not happy either, for it takes about $300,000 a year to run her and she hasn't half that much in sight. BoulaDger has decided not to come on a lecturing tour to this country, the reason is he has struck a soft snap in a feminine admirer who has inherited $l,500,000and is going to devote it all to his cause. The Kansas farmer eits by the cheerful lightof his corn fire, with corn at 11 cents per bushels and thanks his Creator for the blessings of a high protective tariff which gave him a home market. He claims to be able to make it at one-fifth the present cost. If this be true and one-half that is olaimed for alu minum ba true, this is a most important discovery. The doctors in the North are dis puting as to whether the grip which has struok their town?, is the real genuine, imported Russian grip, or only a plain, native American cold, but in the meantime the grip gets there all the same, and proceeds to business in utter contempt of the opinions or wrangles of the doctors. Justioe Brewer,of the United State Supreme Court, among his youthful indiscretions wrote poetry, but in extenuation it may be said it was not spring poetry. Chief Justioe Fuller did, too. It is not given to every body to write poetry, escape, and get on the Supreme bench. A cotton harvester was recently tried in Mississippi, which drawn by two mules did the work splendidly and left so little cotton behind it as to make the expense of cleaning up very trifling. With this machine the cost of picking a bale is estimated at $3, against $11, by hand. Col. Shepard, of the New York Mail and Express, will contribute $500 to the monument to Henry Grady, provided he be allowed lo write the epitaph. There was a lively set-to "on the wharf " yesterday afternoon be tween two active young business men. It was something in the nature of a cyclone but did not last long, and the damage was trifling. An alarm was sent in from box 14, corner of Third and Princess streets, and the firemen turned out promptly. The fire-extinguisher of Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1 was used successfully in this instance, and there was, therefore, no damage by water. 4 First Presbyterian Obnrcb. Tha ar rangements of the committee in charge were complete and perfect, and nothing occurred to mar the enjoy ment. The festivities Wire kept up until a very late hour. ING N, C., WEDNESDAY, OPERA. HOUSE, The Ovlde Rlaaln Concert. The audience at the Opera House last night was one of the most critical that has ever assembled there, and the delight, enthusiasm and even ecstacy of this cultured company, was an enviable compliment to the successful efforts of the appearing ar tists. We can only review the enter tainment briefly, but it was an affair long to be remembered and extolled. Ovide Musin is a master of the vio lin, and his playsng is a revelation as to the capabilities of that instrument. Every sound, every tone, every varia tion, and every ensemble of thes was produced easily, gracefully, ar tistically and correctly, and the rapturous applause of the audience attested their appreciation of his wonderful powers. Few artists of his renown visit our section, and it is pleasant to record that his brief engagement here was so successful . Miss Annie Louise Tanner more than sustained the . reputation that had preceded her, and her numbers were encored again and again. Her charming stage presence may have heightened the effect that her singing produced, but that would be as nothing without that ..wonderful voice. Clear as a bell, rich, full. powerful and melodious; it charms all hearers and delights the senses im measurably. Signor Bologna was in Wilmington a year ago with Campa- nini, and last night he won for him self the greatest praise. He possesses a magnificent voice, of delightful quality, excellent timbre and great compass. The applause so liberally given him on every appearance, was a just recognition of the artistic ex cellence of his renderings. Mr. Eduard Soharf contributed largely to the success if the perform ance, and is a pianist not only of ex ceptional gifts, but of the highest culture. The Ovide Musin Concert Company has left a"; splendid reputa tion. and to-day and forever after there will be a desire to have them come again. Tbe Lirceit Cars. The British steamship Bentala was e'eared yesterday for Liverpool, Eng land, by Messrs. Alex. Sprunt and Son, with the enormous cargo of 9,200 bales of cotton, weighing 4 358,819 pounds and Talued at;$4l8,450 besides 397 barrels of gum thus valued at $l,390,and 5 bundles of cotton samples valued at $50. Total value of cargo, $419,890. This is the largest cargo ever ship" ped from this , port, and the largest cargo of cotton that the Bentala has ever carried setting aside the 397 barrels of gum thus, which are equiv alent to at least 200 bales of cotton. The Bentala received all of her cargo at the Champion Compress wharves, and will sail to day. Her draft is about seventeen feet six inches, which she can easily carry down the river and over the bar on one tide, as several other vessels have done this season- one ship, in fact, having gone to sea drawing eighteen feet (as was men tioned at the time in the Stab) with out obstruction or delay. The Bentala sailed from Galveston, Texas, Oetober 18th last, with a car go of cotton which was heralded to the world by the Galveston News as the larerest ever carried from that port, the paper saying: Messrs. J. Moller & Co. cleared the British steamship Bentala, 1.767 tons net register, for Liverpool with 7,700 bales of cotton, weigning 4UV4,ji pounds, of which she loaded at the wharf and crossed the bar with 7,481 bales weighing 3,973,027 pounds. Whicn is the largest cargo of any kind that has ever crossed Galveston bar, and is equal in weight to 66.000 bushels of grain. This is conclusive proof that the time is not far distant when Galveston will be able to accommodate all kinds of car- e-o as well as cotton, with out lichteniner to anv extent. The cargo was loaded in eleven days, which also illustrate tbe good patch vesse s get at this port. des- fUayor'a Court. Robert Hill, colored who was ar rested last Saturday night along with Sam Reese (whose case was disposed of Monday as reported in the Star) was brought before the court charged with resitting an officer on the occa sion alluded to. After hearing the evidence and the argument of counsel, the Mayor gave judgment against Hill and fined him twenty dollars and the costs. An appeal from the decisioa of the Court was craved by defendant's counsel, Mr. Jno. T. Bellamy, Jr., and was granted; but the appeal was subse quently withdrawn, and Hill was held for the amount of fine and costs. Austin Campbell, colored, disorder ly, was fined twenty dollars and costs. Wm. Daniel, colored, arrested on a peace warrant. Defendant was re quired to furnish bond in the sum of $100.to keep the peace for six months. FORTY YEARS' EXPKREENCK OF AN OLD NURSE.
